  1. Help Please, I'm new to DVD Burning, I have a new Sony DVD Burner and it will only burn 2GIG with ether NERO or Veritas's Software (SONY's)
I have a Shuttle AK32S MB AMD +1800, 512Meg, 200+ HD space (FAT32), and Probably the problem is WIN 98 SE, has anyone had this problem and any suggestions ( I'd like to stay with WIN 98SE).

    Thanks in advance.

    ZRichZ,
First, I have the same burner and software, and OS (originally). That is why I upgraded to W2K. From the little information provided, it is most likely that the problem of only getting 2Gb is due to the OS. WIN98 is limited in that area. I can't remember the exact limit of whether it is 2 or 4Gb but it does have a limit.

Presuming you have a valid VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS configuration and properly formatted IFO,BUP and VOB files, I would make sure I was not trying to write in DATA mode vice Video mode. Easy option to overlook.

Failing at that then, is the problem when trying to burn a DVD, which is made up of multiple IFO, BUP and VOB files each of which is smaller than 2Gb, the burner will not write all of them? Or is it that you have one large VOB file and the burner quits when it gets to 2Gb?

In the case of the latter you will need to either upgrade your OS or split the VOB file into multiple chunks each of which is smaller than the OS file size limit, if you desire to stay with WIN98.

  3. Here is what I would do.
Use Norton Ghost or some such program to make an image of the system.
(this is so you can restore if you screw up)
Assemble the original disks for you software and device drivers.
    wipe the hard drive
    Install Win 2K or XP
I believe the install will request you to change to NTFS system
Install drivers and software as needed

I am sure this will fix your problem.

If something screws up just restore from the GHOST image and start again.

A DVD only has a max file size of 1 GB, so it's not the FAT32 issue. DVD's aren't formatted in FAT, so it doesn't apply again.

The problem is 98SE wasn't written with DVD's in mind. Do you have the latest ASPI drivers loaded? I can guarantee they didn't come with your drive. Reformatting is a little radical for this problem (although going W2K has other advantages).

  5. Thanks for the replys, and sorry for not replying sooner (Christmass and stuff)
Well I found out what the problem was it was the Generic DVD-R's I got, I bought the drive and DVDXCOPY from Tiger Direct and they send me 100 DVD-R's which were junk, I bought a spindle of Memorex and 20 TDK's and they all worked the generics from Tiger were the problems.

Again, thanks for your help and suggestions.
