I've got 2 types of tapes I want to convert to DVD (I am about to purchase a Pioneer 106D Burner.
Please help fill in the blanks
For hi8 tapes:
1) I have the Radeon AIW Video Card and I am using the S-Video to capture
Question: What file type should use to capture I want to get to burn it to a DVD.
2) AFter I capture it..what should I use to convert it to DVD? (is that the same as MPEG2?)
3) I assume I can use Nero to burn the converted file.
For MiniDV:
1) Using Fireware connnector, what format should I save it as to get it to DVD?
2) Same question, what software do I need to convert before burning? (and what file type?...mpeg 2
thanks for helping a newbie.

Hi-8
1) You can either capture directly to MPEG2 if your machine can do that in the quality and resolution that you are looking for. Otherwise you can capture to AVI and convert with TMPGEN or your favorite encoder.
2) After it's in MPEG2 format, you'll need an auhtoring package of some type. My personal preferences in this area are DVD-Lab and TMNPGEN DVD Author.
3) Yes, Nero should work fine. Use the DVD-Video option on the authored files.
miniDV
1) Just copy the miniDV data from the camera to the PC, then convert to MPEG with you favorite encoder.
For anything else, just check out the guides in teh GUIDES section. There are a few there that can wak you through the specifics. -
Easier to get a dvd recorder like a panasonic e50 or higher as these do it in one step or so.

... VERY useful. Granted, it's not the only one but I got DV AVI to DVD compliant mpeg2 in superb quality after using it. It also covers other settings that can cause problems (like GOP headers).
Good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.
