  1. i hear all of the above are relatively cheap media...but how does the actual quality of the disc stack up? is there a better quality one? one with more compatability? are these the cream of teh crop, if so which is best? or is there better?

    thanx for any help

  2. I have never had a bad Ritek, Princo, or Sky disc however some say TDK are the best. I buy the TDK whenever I find them on sale.

Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R is the best for that format. I don't mess around with -RW or anything +R

The FUJI 10-packs DVD-R discs (which come in full sized CD jewel cases) in stores like BEST BUY say MADE IN JAPAN and are Taiyo-Yuden 4x DVD-R discs.

You can also buy Taiyo-Yuden discs direct from places like RIMA

Please note some FUJI DVD-R media packs are NOT Taiyo-Yuden. Only the packs that say MADE IN JAPAN are Taiyo-Yuden. The other packs say MADE IN TAIWAN and are usually RITEK G03 DVD-R discs.

The MAXELL DVD-R brand is also very good but harder to find than FUJI and the same price so you might as well go with FUJI since they are 4x and the MAXELL discs are 2x.

TDK DVD-R discs are OK if it says MADE IN JAPAN otherwise it is probably RITEK G04 DVD-R discs.

Do you know who makes the Sky discs? There are a TON of those here in Germany and most likely they will be going very cheap after xmas.

They are made by Sky. There was a link to their website which I visited about a month ago but I don' have it now. I think their factory is in Finland or something like that and the operation is run by a Russian dude.

OK here is the link http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/skymedia/ and they are in Switzerland not Finland LOL.

Funny you should mention cheep in there as someone was moaning about the cost of riteks.....
Strange you should mention princo in the list as a search will bring up many horror stories and advice to avoid like the plague...Personally had no issues with them but i prefer ritek's as they are more compatable with ps'2 and x box where as the pinco's wont entertain the dam things.

Wouldnt say one is better (except for dropping princo) then the other as a lot depends on your set up and what uses you have for the finished product.

I have never ever heard of any kind of problems with Taiyo Yuden in regard to anything.

Truely makes them unique in that regard. Grade A+ stuff.

I replied in the original thread, but thought I'd better post it here too. I did see some Fuji TY's the other day but mistook the store and the price. The disks I saw at Walmart were the Maxell 2x -R from Japan---for $19.97 per 10 pack. Sorry for the misinformation.

That kinda makes more sense since I know WAL-MART has carried the MAXELL DVD-R discs in the past (I say "in the past" because I hardly ever go to WAL-MART).

The FUJI Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R discs are 4x but I wouldn't mind saving 5 bucks and "downgrading" to a 2x disc. At least not on occassion because I admit that 4x sure will spoil you speed wise

Been awhile since I used the MAXELL discs but in the early days that was all I could get and they still work and have ZERO read errors so yeah I'd say they are as good as Taiyo Yuden.

If you had a Meijers in your area, they have the Taiyo Yuden 4x Fuji 5 packs on sale buy 1 get one free, comes to $13.00 for 10.

The non Japan made Fuji's are ProdiscS03, still not bad, but not Taiyo Yuden either.

Well hopefully someone can make use of that sale price but as for myself I have never even heard of Meijers so yeah I'm pretty sure that isn't in my area or anywhere close to me.

  14. so...from wut i gather fromt the two topics (sorry bout that...one didn't have ne responses originally so i started this one to get more attention) i should be goin wit either taiyo yuden or tdks if i want max quality/compatablity right? and ritek as a secondary media.

btw. im hoping these both work wit the plextor 708a, cuz that's what im getting (just been doin my research).

and on the topic of decent priced taiyos what about these: http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/amo/p_proddetail.php?kitNbr=530
    and for riteks: http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/amo/p_proddetail.php?kitNbr=300

are these the good quality ones? and how are those prices?

thanx for all your help guys!

Meijer's are only in the following states. MI, IN, IL, OH and KY. Regional chain. All stores like Wal - Mart Super Centers. And like Wal-Mart was family owned and run.
May the force be with you.

    Best on-line price I have seen for Taiyo-Yuden 4x DVD-R discs is at RIMA.COM

If you buy a 100 pack then it is only $168.00 or $1.68 per disc.
