ok,
let me re-phrase that:
I know there are some dvd writers that are labeled 8X. Anyone actually burned at 8X ? (about 7 minutes to write a full disk) ?
The reason i'm asking is that i think ide channel can transfer at 6X max (about 10MB/sec)
thanks -
did you actually click the links I gave you
The only word that comes to mind when seeing the above screenshot is 'wow'.. The complete DVD was written in only 8 minutes which is of course the fastest recording time we've ever seen. When you compare the recording time of the Plextor PX-708A drive to the recording time of a 4x DVD recorder, it's about 6 minutes shorter. The reason why the 8x PX-708A drive isn't twice as fast as a 4x drive is because the PX-708A starts the recording process at 6x recording and after a certain point it increases the recording speed to 8x.

Theres about 20 other reviews (Nu-Tech, LiteON, etc...) you can find.
Just do a search... -
8x is within UDMA buss speeds. But, you really need to be fully UDMA100 or better. This is not for the 5400 RPM older drives. They can do the speed, but it's iffy if they can do 4.3 GB sustained. If they are fully defragged then you should be okay (goes without saying for any drive), but you don't have a lot of room to spare for mess ups. Buffer Underrun technology is absolute requirement, but nearly all drives have that.

I read that Plextor only does 8x if you do a full disk, if not reverts to 4x. In the above example that was a full disk.

What does it consider to be a full disc.
-
I have the Plextor and have done a few full disk movies at 8X. It works great. The buffer was very stable too. I haven't done one in a while but it took just over 8 minutes if I remember well.
I can't comment on the time for a non full disk burn. I've never used the 8X speed disk(TDKs) for a small project. -
What about serial ATA. Would a DVD burner get more data if it incorporated a serial ATA interface ?
