also, does ripping with your dvd writer really wear down the laser?

Not sure about the first part, but I doubt you will wear out the laser reading disks. You may wear out the mechanism a little early if you played a few thousand movies with it. If you have the extra room, a DVD ROM drive is usually faster and more convenient for reading disks, especially if you use a program like DVDshrink and AutoShrink. No disk changing needed.

  3. thnks for the info, the reason i ask is because i don't have room for a new dvd rom (my 2nd bay is for my samsung 48x24x48 cd burner which is alot faster than my memorex dvd drive), so i guess i will continue to use my dvdwriter for ripping.....plus its a oem pioneer so i shouldnt have to worry to much cuz of their great quality.

can anyone still tell me what is the difference between the modified memorex 1.05 fw compared to the "true" pioneer 106d 1.07 fw?

also are their any hacked fw's that can make a cdrw drive hav dvdrom capability? mine is a samsung sw-248f

  4. oh well....already flashed my memorex using the hacked 1.07 fw by >:NIL which lets me rip at faster than 2x so I am definitely happy, plus now my drive is a true 106d.

i am still curious as to what is the difference between the 1.05 fw modified by memorex and the official 1.07 fw by pioneer

True Pioneer is always better than OEM. Horror stories from my OEM days, we owe a lot to NIL and Gradius at rpc1 ... 8)
