  1. Just bought a new WinTV USB external device (not a card) and the moving video pictures from the cable connection are great. But, there is NO sound coming through. I tried all the suggestions in the manual and from the FAQ's on the website, to no avail. I did get a little sound when I put on headphones, connected to the Audio Out from the device, but cannot get anything out of my Vectra. Help? I'd be happy to just hear regular tv audio. Don't need Audio_over_Usb or anything fancy.
    Thanx,
    Don

Which device are we talking about, how are you running audio into your system, and what have you done so far? It's too bad this is your first response, as this information should have been included in your post.

I did get a little sound
    Thats ABSURD

if you got a LITTLE sound..the sound is working

Do YOU know how to turn up the level with the RECORDING slider ?(hidden in all windows OS'es behind the PLAY MIXER)

You must've seen that in the FAQ you read? NO?
Turn up the slider and you'll have a lotta sound!

Or redescribe your problem so we can actually HELP YOU!
    where sound isn't coming..
you don't say if its monitoring or recoring issue
are you making AVI's? MPEG's directly?
Does the device use your audio card or does it have its own USB audio you allude to but don't explain?
Are you monitoring on a TV or the computer?
are you running WIN2K or NT4.0? (some of the tuner features of WINTV devices do not work properly in these os'es)

  4. Ok, sorry for the vagueries. I should have been more specific.
I am mainly a Mac guy and have only had this pc 1 year and am not as good on it as on the Mac.
I just want to watch tv in a small window on the desktop with sound.
It's an HP Vectra, 400mz, running Windows 2000Pro; sadly I do not know whether there is a sound card per se in the computer but I listen to cd's and internet radio in stereo a lot where the sound booms out of the two desktop speakers just fine. Would that indicate there's a sound card? When I look in devices and selections there is something called Crystal Fusion in many places. In the Recording Control/Options/Advanced - as far into this as I can go, I have the TV Tuner audio input selected and the sound is on, not muted, and the same TV Tuner option is selected throughout the array of selections for which audio I want to use for the WinTV USB program.
The tv signal comes from a regular home tv cable (which works fine on the Mac) and the line goes from the wall into the WinTV box and the line out of the box goes into the USB jack on the computer.
There is something mentioned in the manual about Audio_over_USB and a .reg file that can be installed or uninstalled if you want to use the supplied audio cable which would run out of the WinTV box and into a sound card, but the .reg file is NOT on the disc, as it's supposed to be. When I tried to use this wire I ran it into the Mike-in on the back of the computer. No luck.
This is a monitoring issue. I just want to watch tv on the pc's desktop.
The way I got a little (it sounds soft and distant) sound was by plugging in headphones to the Audio Out jack of the WINTV box, the jack that handles the wire that should go to the sound card. So, *some* sound is passing thru, but again, it' soft.
D, did I find the right Recording Slider you were talking about behind the Play Mixer?
Thanx for your help. Looking forward to your reply,
    Don

Does your WinTV USB device look like this?:

The reason I ask is it is the device I "cut my teeth on" in video capturing. If you look on the side, you will notice an audio line in, and an audio line out. The audio source is connected to the device as you said, in line in, but you also connect the line out jack to your computer's line in jack as well. Or to your sound card if that is how you produce audio for your system, ibid.:

    Tommy said it all

I would add that while video goes over USB audio must be patched from the USB device here to the LINE IN of your CRYSTAL device..which as you guessed is not a sound card, but a part of the motherboard that handles sound (just like a MAC!)..on windows we mark the line in with BLUE and MIC in with RED

    good luck

  7. Thanx Tommy and DC,
Yes, Tommy, that is exactly the same device I bought last night. Thanx for taking the pix. Now, I thought that both tv video AND audio came into the WinTV box just like they do when you plug a cable into the back of a tv set. But, if as Dc says, only the video actually comes through the cable and is sent through USB into the computer, then where does the accompanying audio come from? Also, isn't there a way to simply use the cable from the wall into the WinTV and out through the USB line to watch tv on the screen?
    Thanx v. much,
    Don

I also remember having to download the latest drivers to get it working right as well. The coaxial cable (the antenna feed from the wall) should also provide audio as well, but you have to know which audio level to adjust with your system.

On your desktop, usually, in the lower right hand corner, should be a little speaker symbol. Double clicking on it brings up all the volume level switches. Check these as well to ensure your audio level is correct.

You guys are the best! I ran the audio out from the WinTV box into the Line In (blue) instead of Mic-in and presto - there's the sound!
    Excellent!
    Thanx so much,
    Don
p.s. my only remaining question is what happened to the little speaker icon that was in the Task Bar (i think that's what it's called - where the tiny icons for the Network Connection, QuickTime, Automatic Updates, etc. are. There WAS a speaker I could right click to raise and lower the volume. Now, it's a 3-click process to get to the Volume Control. Thanx!

In windows 2K and XP you go
    START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>
    sounds and multimedia

Right there is a CHEQUEMARQUE box that when checked will make the speaker ICON APPEAR..
SOMETIMES IT TAKES A REBOOT or has to be done 2X (buggy)
