Just wondering if there is any tool that can analyze MPEG-2 files
and report if they are interlced or progressive ?

I'd first try Bitrate Viewer if I were you. However, being that I haven't been able to install the app myself for some odd reason, I use FlaskMPEG to scan for progressive/interlaced streams.
