  1. I have captured some video via a Bt848 capture card connected to the S-Video output of a satellite receiver. Based on what a Bt848 capturing guide I read on the web said, I captured the video as uncompressed YUY2 at 352x480. The page said to do this so that I got both the even and odd lines of the interlaced video. Now I want to know what the best way would be to convert this footage. I tried using a VirtualDub "2:1 vertical reduction" filter but the output from that seems to be really blurry. I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer. Also, if capturing this video the way I did isn't the optimal way then I would also appreciate any input on a better way to do it.

What do you want to do with this video? Do you want to make a DVD with it? Do you want to watch it on your computer? If you're making a DVD(or SVCD) you shouldn't deinterlace it. If you're going to watch it on your computer(or you're going to make a VCD) then you should use Smart Deinterlacer to deinterlace the video. Since you captured at 352x480, you're going to have to resize it to display properly on your computer. Resize it to either 704x480 or 352x240. Be sure to deinterlace before you resize.

Also, you should be using compression for your video captures. Try HuffYUV or PIC Video MJPEG. HuffYUV is free, PIC Video MJPEG is shareware. They're both really fast and really reduce the size of the video.
