  1. Hi,

This is my very first time into creating a DVD from my AVI files. I'm just looking for some guidance. I've been creating VCDs so i have knowledge on the matter... but none on DVD.

Firstly, how do i convert my avi files? Do i use tmpgenc to convert them into a DVD format of my choice? Will it give me an "MPEG-2" file? Is there any advice someone can give me on this.. anything i should be concerned about.. some settings or something?

Secondly, i have the AC3 Decoder loaded in my system. How do i use it? I have no clue how to work with Sound.

Once i can get the desired dvd format file... i guess i'll move to the Authoring section to learn how to Author the DVD from the video.

    Thanks,
    Mickey

If you look up avi-DVD in the guides section you will get a listing of several guides using many different programs. Here's one by Baldrick, the moderator of this site. It's pretty basic, which is where you should start.

Baldrick has another guide for when you have AC3 sound, here.

  3. There is one of 2 programs u can use,

    [First program]

    DVD2SVCD
    ---------------
DVD2SVCD is a good program, When u install it select AVI2DVD and all you have to do is load the avi file in and then go to encoder and i would choose the cinema craft encoder and the go back to conversion and click start easy as hell and great for newbies

    [Second Program]
    tmpgenc
    --------------
This program is a awsome tool for encoding avi 2 wothever u like, all you have to do is follow the wizard and you can set it up to convert avi2dvd but i think you minght need to extract the audio with virtualdub first which is easy...

ZippyP., Thanks a lot... i'll be checking into those guides in detail. Both look pretty good and useful. Thanks again.

XooL, I'll look into the first Program. I have TMPGEnc DVD Author as well, do you think i can use that? And TMPGEnc for the Conversion?
One thing i didn't get... you talked about extracting sound in VirtualDUB.. what is with that? Should i extract the sound seperately as .WAV? Where does AC3 Encoding come into picture?

    Thanks,
    Mickey
