I'm just starting to look at LCD monitors. I saw an NEC Multisync today that looked nice, and I've seen an 18" Sony that looked nice as well. Is there any that I should avoid? These two are nice brands, eh?

  2. Not sure which is better without more info but I know that you'll want to get one with the Lowest or fastest repsonse rates. Meaning will there be slow fading pictures when watching video games. It's measured in milliseconds. The lower the # the better it's supposed to be. I would say 16ms is good. But I'm no expert just know that from personal experience. Do you have the model #'s of those two you were looking at??

  3. While I don't yet have an LCD monitor, I did look at them and found one thing you might want to keep in mind. If you use the display at a non-native resolution (like sending 800x600 to a 1280x1024 panel) the panel will do scaling to expand the screen to the whole panel size. This scaling creates artifacts at the edges of things (out of necessity, since the LCD pixels are a fixed size). This is most noticable displaying text. I found the scaling algorithms that Samsung used on the 17" panel with the built-in TV tuner were far superior to any other manufacuter. The resulting scaled image was much nicer to look at, text got a little "fuzzy" but was better then all the other manufactures.

I'm looking at them this week also as I'm having monitor problems. There is a 17inch sony on newegg.com with a 16ms response time (SWEET!) that is about $435 with shipping, because there is a discount when you add it to your cart. I'm been considering it all week but chicken out because well.... ITS 400 FOR A MONITOR! (sorry about that, its just alot of cash if you ask me) BTW its native rez is 1280x1024 and it looked great in person when I tracked one down.

Also remember that the size listed on an LCD is usally the actual size unlike a CRT so a 17" LCD is larger in screen area then a 17" CRT monitor. Matter of fact my friends 18" Dell LCD makes his 19" CRT look stupid.
