  1. Need a bit of help or info here. I got a small quatity of Sandy Yang 4x DVD-R media. Burned several movie backups from ISO files (all DVD9-to-DVD5 using DVDShrink); some worked fine but others burned upto about 90% then I got write or I/O errors (depening on the burning software). Is it possible this media is low-quality (i.e. crap)? First of all, here's the ADIP info from DVDIndentifier:

    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:VDSPMSAB 01]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc Type : [DVD-R]
    Manufacturer ID : [VDSPMSAB 01]
Disc Application Code : [Unrestricted Use : Consumer Purpose]
    Recording Speeds : [1x - 2x - 4x]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3 MB = 4.38 GB]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone ID the actual manufacturer from this? DVD Decrypter's built-in burning utility gave me the first coaster; a write error at 93%. Format capacity from it is:

    Format Capacity:
    Sectors: 2,298,496
    Size: 4,707,319,808 bytes
    Time: 510:48:46 (MM:SS:FF)

The files I burned were all less (but close) than the listed size in both sectors and actual bytes. The three files were (Sec./GB):

    2,297,456 | 4,705,189,888
    2,286,361 | 4,682,467,328
    2,286,366 | 4,682,416,128*

*This was burned w/ Nero 5.5x which failed w/ a write error at 89%.

Again, these are very close to full capacity but don't exceed it. And for the last one Nero would've warned me if it was too big. So, are these too close for comfort or is it probable that I have bad media? Drive used was a Sony DRU-510A @ 4x. Here's a scan of what one of the failed discs looks like on the data side; looks almost like it ran out of room about ¼" from the outer edge (am I seeing that right)?

Any opinions, info, comments, etc., appreciated.

  3. I bought a small quantity, cheap, to try out. I was hoping to decipher the actual manufacturer. But considering the failure rate of those SY's I tried, you can be rest-assured I won't be buying any again! I've also got a bunch of Imation & Verbatim media and have had no troubles w/ that!

I agree that anything called Sandy Yang would be suspect, and your media probably sucks.
I also noticed that the amount of data that you are putting on your disks is pushing the limit.
For instance, DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 automatically limits the size of the data it creates to 4.36 GB. (That's 1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes)
If you go much beyond this, you could have problems.

    4,705,189,888 = 4.59 GB
    4,682,467,328 = 4.57 GB
    4,682,416,128 = 4.57 GB

Again, the problem is most likely the media, but you should try using just a sightly smaller amount of data, just in case.

All those files were created using DVDShrink 3.0 ß5 in combination w/ AutoShrinkISO 1.6.

But as I said, I won't be buying any more SY's. Basicly, since I just got my burner about 1½ weeks ago, I'm trying different media to see what works best. Thanks to the others for the input. Live and learn.

My Imation +R and -R was perfect along w/ Verbatim and Sony -R. How's KHypermedia +R? I got a 10-pack of those from Officemax (since they had a rebate) but haven't used 'em yet.
