  1. Has anyone had any luck getting closed caption to work with mpg media format? I've tried converting DVD to MPG and was not able to get CC to work. Any ideas or is there a special mpeg codec with cc decoder that will handle mpg media format? I've tried PowerDVD, WinDVD, UltraDVD and ATI DVD player with no luck.

DVD doesn't have CC, they have subtitles. Go to the guides and search how to encode with subtitles.

Don't ask me how, because I haven't done it.

I know that PowerDVD supports Closed Captions on DVDs. I don't know about plain mpg.

    Are there captions on DVDs?
Standards were created very late for DVDs, so there are several different ways to put captions on them. The most common approaches are to either embed Line-21-style captions in what are called the "user bits," or to use "subpictures" to display captions that look like subtitles. Your DVD player must support the same method that was used to encode the DVD, although many DVDs use both of these methods.

When using subtitles, DVDs support captioning in multiple languages.
It can be implemented, but usually is trough subtitles. If you have a DVD recorder I think you can keep the CC info, I'm not sure if you edit the video.

As for commercial DVD, I don't think they have CC.

  5. Commercial DVDs do have CC. Most also have subtitles. The CC is written differently into the digital video than it is on a TV broadcast signal. Although I do not know the specifics.

But it is easy to verify that DVDs have CC. For me it is easy as muting my TV.

  7. Yes, some have both. When they do you have to turn one off to watch your video.

You could perhaps convert the closed captions or subs to open captions & those should display in MPG.

  8. Almost all DVD movies have Closed Caption but when trying to convert it to MPG format and CC no longer works with PowerDVD or WinDVD. Let's not debate whether DVD have closed caption or not but majority of them does and teletext is out of the question since it's irrevelant in this topic. The main thing is getting CC to work with mpeg decoder or player AFTER doing the conversion to MPG format.
