  1. I recently purchased a Sony DRU510A and wondering which DVD format is used for most DVD players. It seems when I ask this question to the salesmen I get both answers. Could someone set me straight on this issue since Santa may bring me a pack of DVD ?r and DVD RW ?r I plan to convert some old family VCR tapes via Pinnacle Studio 8 and want thenm to play on everyones DVD player(I hope)!

    Thanks, as best holiday wishes

  2. Broken Record, your post is much like a broken record. Over and over and over again we argue the merits of + versus -

Technically speaking, and according to, among others, a reports by cdfreaks.com, DVD-R is more compatible. The reason? There are a lot of DVD players that were manufactured and sold before DVD+R became available. That being said, there are many of those DVD players that will play DVD+R. And -RW, and +RW for that matter.

DVD-R is always a safe bet. It was 'invented' by the DVD Forum, the people who license the DVD logo and the technology behind the pre-recorded DVDs you find in the store. DVD+R will work in most situations, but you might want to check and see if any of your 'customers' have DVD players listed in this website's database that have problems with it.

If you are talking about commercially produced DVDs
they are neither one. They are 2 layer stamped.

  4. Yes, FOO. But weren't the specifications for DVD-R authored by the DVD Forum in such a way that playback compatibility was maximized on existing DVD optics?

Yes. The Alliance had to guess and do it on their own. At first, they were way off. Not much behind these days.

    Um...

DVD-9s, DVD-18s and DVDs with CSS cannot be created from DVD-R(A) discs but must be mastered from DLT. This applies only when a mother-father stamper must be created for mass-production of discs.
