  1. say i have 2 movies that i want to encode with tmpgenc,if i made the 2 movies(full length feature films) fill 50% of my dvd each, this would make the films have a smalll bitrate, how would this work our would it play ok with a small bitrate or would it look rough?

basically can i fit 2 films on one dvdr ???

  2. Yes, you can fit multiple movies on 1 DVD. It all comes down to what you will consider acceptable.

Normally what is suggested for situations like this might be:

    A) Use half D1(352x480) resolution, since you will have a low bitrate, artifacting and such will not be as noticable as with full D1(720x480) resolution.

    B) Make a DVD-VCD, if this is an option for you.

Quality will depend on the original source as well as the quality of the encoder. Again, only you will be able to decide what is considered acceptable.

What I would suggest is to do a couple of test. Take a small snippet of what you want, create it in all the potential formats, then view them and see what you can live with. This reason is why RW discs are worth their weight in gold.

I agree with andkiich, 1/2 D1 is a good way to get 2 movies onto a DVD as it does not need as high a bitrate as full DVD resolution. If you want even better quality then you can use 2-pass VBR encoding as well. 2-pass allocates bitrate between the high and low bitrate settings as required by the video. High motion scenes get a high rate and low motion scenes a lower rate. It analyzes the first pass and then writes the data on the second pass, so it can take twice as long. Using 2-pass and 1/2 D1 you should be able to get up to 5 hrs. of decent quality video on a DVD.
