Okay, so I have been using IC8 for a while and I am pretty happy with the results that it has yielded so far but there are some exceptions. I am pretty anal and I like to keep the menu and extras so I know that I will suffer w/ some movies in terms of compression. My question's this, is there a way to encode a movie (through TMPGENc or another program) to yield better quality than a program such as IC8 which simply transcodes movies? I thought maybe there was a way to encode a DVD movie to a lower bitrate thus giving better quality than a simple transcode. Can this be done or am I making stuff up?![]()

Absolutely, but it's a bit more complex than that.
The transcoders don't have to demux, fiddle, remux, and fix IFOs and whatnot. If you re-encode, you will have to do that.
So if you're looking to keep the menus, extras, and whatnot... you're either in for a LOT of work (which gets easier with time, trust me) or stick with the transcoders.
But if you just want the movie, there are guides aplenty on doing just what you're thinking of, either with TMPGEnc or CCE.
There are even guides on keeping EVERYTHING while re-encoding the movie, just bear in mind that it's a lot of work - or uses "the big 3", which are pricey programs.

just a slight correction...
"the big 3" consists of freeware, however, the method makes use of one pricey program
