  1. I have a movie file in mkv format (x264-AAC), which I want to convert into a format playable on my standalone dvd player (supports xvid, divx-ultra, svcd, dvd etc). Also I only have a CD-RW burner, so the output file should preferably be able to fit on 2 CDs (700MB-80Min). Since I don't have much experience in encoding, can anybody suggest how I could go about doing this with minimum loss in quality from the original video. Re-encoding does seems necessary in this case.

    Original video MediaInfo stats:

Nope. So you need to convert. I would probably use a simple all-in-one converter like xmedia recode, format factory or xvid4psp.

No. Most of them are limited to DivX/Xvid, and might also let you play MPEGs from the file menu. But that's usually about it.

My 5990 also allows WMV, to an extent, but that's rare.

Note that if your source MKV uses a resolution greater than 720x576 that your DVD player may refuse to play it. If the source file resolution is larger than that, I would suggest that as part of your conversion process that you drop the resolution to get it below 720x576.
