I tried to rip a couple of movies for backup recently but ran into a problem that I had come across in the past. Pirates of the Carribean and LOTR: Two Towers. First, my read rate isn't above 1.9 times on those movies and I don't for the life of me know why and it's the same with decryptor and smartripper. Second, I get about 50-60 percent through ripping it and then my read rate drops to 0.0times and I get read errors and broken blocks after that. Third, I get an error every now and then that says something like "Data Read Error: Cyclyndic Redundancy Check". So what's that mean?? I'm beginning to wonder if it's just my stupid DVD drive on my HP.

If anyone can give me some pointers I sure would appreciate it because I tried everything I knew how and finally gave up on those movies.

    Thanks

  2. The reason you don't get above 1.9x is because your drive is one of those that is locked at 2X. Get a LitON LTD- 163 or 166 drive and you get numbers above 14x. As for the errors it could be the discs are damaged or need a good cleaning. Also you could try ripping as much of the disc as possible then whatever file is missed try to just copy it directly from the discs to the hard drive and then rip it. I have done this myself but sometimes windows will not let me copy the file then at times it will, go figure.

I actually tried just "piecing" the movie together as you said but XP gave me that data read error I stated earlier which I have also seen with decryptor before. Nontheless, couldn't get a couple of crucial files to rip with anything and thus, I just plain gave up trying.

BUT: I have gotten 7.0x read rate on some past DVD's but these my player just seemed to lock onto that 2.0x.

Where can I get a good a price on a LitON LTD drive?? And do they make external ones since that would be a better way to go than my internal drive which also is doubling as my burner right now too.

  4. You can buy the LiteON 166 here for $33.

Don't know about an external version of the drive. Also FYI I have had a couple of DVD's myself that had terrible problems ripping. Since I have two computers at home and both with DVD drives and DVD burners I can usually get one of the drives to read the bad part of the disc.

CRC errors mean you are having problems reading the disc.

    Common causes:

    1. Dirt
    2. Dust
    3. Scratches
    4. Fingerprints
    5. Disc warping (left in sun, etc.)

You cannot fix the problem by using different software, a different drive may or may not help depending on the problem.

    So:

    - Clean the disc
    - Use scratch remover (aka toothpaste)
    - Cry

    That's it.

    - Gurm

I have had fun in the past with a very small percentage of DVDs. I found that there was almost always a fingerprint on the disc somewhere that was causing the broken blocks. Without cleaning, I would try ripping using a different DVD Drive as I have found that my Pioneer DVD-ROM is very sensitive whereas I can read just about anything in my Liteon DVD-ROM or my Pioneer DVD-Writer.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yeah, I have come to realize that my drive that came with my HP is very sensitive and in some cases doesn't even want to play the movie, even if the movie is clean and not dirty at all. The movie will just keep breaking up(pausing and then going again). I have also concluded that these spots where I can't even watch the movie w/out it breaking up are the spots causing the read probs. with all of my software. It's definetely my drive.
