I have been using Gordian Knot 28.6.2 and DivX 5.1.1 to encode my dvds to DivX with mp3 sound according to the DivX5 guide at doom9.net. After encoding I end up with a 1.36GB movie. The quality is great and I can fit 3 movies on one dvd or split one movie and fit it on two cds.
I am wanting to encode to DivX and also have surround sound. Any input on what I should use for setting to keep the surround sound?

Encode the video to DivX
Load corresponding vob file into Besweet GUI-extract audio as ac3. (Simple demuxing to get ac3 works most of the time)
Mux with Virtualdub ac3 or Virtualdub mod(direct stream copy for both video and audio)
Download link for virtualdub ac3

in the audio tab in gordain knot disable the audio.
mux with avi-mux or virtualdubmod thats included in GK.
to still get the right size, you add bitrate of the ac3 in the audio box. -
for muxing audio with avi files, i recommend avimux as well, i've had some problems with virtualdub, and i believe avimux is also significantly faster as well.

I agree with zodiac, when Muxing I personally recommend AVI_MuxGUI for AVIs with either AC3 or MP3.
The only other thing I would add is to try converting the 5.1 AC3 track to a 2 channel "Pro-Logic II like" MP3 (or better yet Ogg, although you will then need to Mux with Vdubmod) It is very easy to do this in Headac3he (just select surround2 on the first options tab) and I am sure BeSweet will do this as well. I have found that when played on my 5.1 computer speakers it is quite acceptable vs the original Dobly Digital track.
Actually I would say that it is better for me as my computer speakers are not that good at producing a seemless soundfield in my current setup. As a result, pure AC3 tracks are too seperated (sounds coming from individual speakers are distractingly seperate) therefore the somewhat more mixed soundfield of the 2 channel surround is preferable plus it leaves more space for the video. -
AVIMUX for AC3 muxing. VDUB get's flaky trying to load the AC3 file on me, and tha't on multiple versions I've tried.

i use virtualdubmod 1.5.4.1 b2178
i dont have any problems with it.been useing it since they changed it. -
Theres a plugin that works with virtualdub that allows you to compress/decompress AC3 audio. I'm running virtualdub 1.5.1 and everything works great for me.
you can find it here:

forget all that and use autogk, it allows you to have ac3 sound or mp3 and is virtually a one-click solution.. give it a go, it's just a front end for what you have been doing anyway!
