    Guys,

I'm looking for recommendations for a DVD player with good DivX/xvid support available in the UK with a budget of approx £100.

    Thanks

Your budget is a bit high, try halving it......

    Cheers,

I presume you are suggesting the DK Digital 339 / 500 models. Does anyone have experiencve of these players as reaction seems mixed when i look them up under DVD PLayer listings on the left hand menu bar.

Another model to think about is the Philips DVP630. I bought mine from Dixons last year for about £70. It has played every format I've thrown at it (Not tried DivX 6 though) without any problems. The one thing I have found is that it prefers XviD on DVD rather than CD. On CD I find the audio goes slightly out of sync. I can't remember the US model number but that also gets quite favourable reviews on this site.

    S'funny you should ask that.

Over the past few days, I had similar needs - although I was expecting to pay around £50-60.

I wanted a multi-region DVD player, that also played DivX / Xvid.

So I went to Maplin, and I bought a Yamada DVR-8400X and it was £99. That does all of the above, and is also a DVD recorder.

So far, very impressed with it, considering what it cost.

It doesn't have any intelligent "just-fit" recording quality profiles, nor videoplus, nor does it have a DVB-T / freeview tuner built in, nor a hard drive - but I wouldn't have expected that for £99. And as I wasn't really that interested in buying a dvd recorder, I just wanted a multiregion DVD player, that played DivX / Xvid, I'm happy to pay a bit more and also have a DVD recorder.

It does record from RF aerial input, as well as SCART, S-Video, composite and DV input. It also has a USB port for connecting USB mass storage devices. Supports Progressive scan output, YUV, RGB, and S-Video.

Will take a look in my local Maplin in the next day or two.

Does anyone know what the support from Yamada is like - do you offer firmware updates etc.

They do provide firmware updates - I've updated mine (well I think I have, I'm not sure what version it was previously).

There's more in the way of updates for the previous models.

And there appears a burgeoning community in terms of support for both official firmware releases, and unofficial releases.

FWIW, the firmware upgrade for my 8400X contains a file named PHILIPS.BIN, so presumably it's using philips hardware.

As to the other brands in Maplin, all the other "no-name" (or not big name) dvd / divx players seem to come from this manufacturer - seeing as they have the yamada brand, umax, and chili.
