  1. Greetings,

I'm planning on buying our first DVD player tomorrow on the Black Friday sale day. I have three options but could not come to decision to what to purchase:

    Apex 1225 at Sears.
    Apex 1600 at Ultimate Audio
    Apex 1130W at Wal-mart.

I'm basically looking for the player that can play commercial DVD movies, VCD and SVCDs, and DVD-/+R. I make my home video movies on SVCDs since I do not have a DVD burner yet (christmas maybe). After that I intend to burn all my home videos to DVD-R or +R.

I have done hectic research on all the above three Apex models and I still can not come to the conclusion. Most likely I will be buying 1225 at Sears but I'm also worried about A/V sync for SVCDs. I just can't come to conclusion.

I have several VCDs that were brought from HK too. We watch our DVDs and SVCDs and VCDs from computer output to TV through TV-out. Ofcourse not to mention Divx too. That's not important for the DVD player since I can't afford one that can play Divx.

Your help is very much appreciated. And happy Turkey day (as my 2 year daughter likes to call Thanksgiving) to all those from US.

    Sincerely,
    Danzian

  4. Sears was out of stock by the time I got there.

So I got a KOSS 365 player. It is all right I guess.

It has played all my SVCDs so far only that it does not have 'Goto' feature on its remote. The time search only works on DVD movies but not on SVCDs or VCDs. That's too bad.

The JPEG viewer can load all gazillian pictures on the CD but lacks index.

    Thanks.

The new Apex players suck. It disappointing.
The great days were with the 1000/1500 and the 1100W.
Visit www.nerd-out.com for best Apex info.

The Cyberhome line-up has stolen their thunder.
The 300 is excellent (Walmart, $40), as are the 400 and 500 (RadioShack).

  7. I bought the same Koss for my mother in law because by the time I got to Sears all of the 1225's were gone! I also picked up the Apex ADV 3800 because it was on sale for 79.00 (regularly 119.00) I wanted this one because I was tired of not being able to watch my VCD's in the bedroom. I had been using my PS2 as a DVD player there. I also am planning on giving my VCR in the bedroom to my parents. Anyway, the 3800 has played everything I have thrown at it except for DIVX on discs! But great player for everything else!!

  8. Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm going to return the Koss player today. The 'Goto' feature is a big thingie for me. Koss player lacks this feature for SVCDs.

I will see what I can find next.

    Thanks.

  9. How about the Pioneer DV-260 for $79.95? Supposed to play most everything and progressive scanning, too. Be careful not to get the 250 for the same price. For $40 more bucks, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it over the Apex 1225 (my Walmart never has the Cyberhome units).

And then how to swap my daughter my old Apex 500 for the new one come January.

  10. I bought the 1130w from walmart, but I haven't unpacked it.

Does this thing play DVD-RWs? It's not in the players list.

  11. Ok, I bought Apex 1100W today. It is 512K model with 1100-1 firmware. It won't run my VCDs (anime) brought from HK, but it does play VCDs burnt from PC softwares.

My SVCD's were all distorted time to time. It also lacks auto play for VCDs and SVCDs. Menu, titles and chapters for SVCDs did not work the way I wanted. All my SVCDs are made with Ulead Movie Factory.

I did not like its JPEG viewer. I could not skip the pictures for some reasons just slideshow. It is sometimes annoying when you don't want to view that particular picture for even 5 secs.

The remote is also not to my satisfaction. I'm returning this model to Wal-mart and stick with Koss 365.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate.

    Regards,
    Danzian

I just picked up the JVC xvn33sl for $69.00 plus it has a $15.00 rebate so its $55.00 total. I just played a vcd, an svcd, a DVD-R, a DVD+R and a DVD+RW all played flawlessly.
