I got my Lite On 166S which is great...but it makes a weird noise when I put a disc in so I'm returning to new egg. I was able to rip single sided dvd's at 12x and dual at about 7x or so.

My buddy with a Sony SONY 16X DVD-ROM Drive, Model DDU1621 says he ripped THE ROCK at 15x and it even encoded in 5 mins using dvd2one...but his CPU is 2Ghz vs. my 1.2Ghz...so faster CPU helps encoding?

Are sony drives unlocked too then?

Yes- a faster CPU encodes faster than a slower CPU.
