  1. What is the best, cheap media for the Liteon LDW-401S burner? Or maybe I should have said, workable or compatible.

  2. Unlike the DVD-R media, there are only a handful manufacturers making the DVD+R media, Ritek being the major one. As long as you buy the name brand media, I doubt you'll have any major issue. Just make shure that your DVD player and DVD-ROM drive can handle the +R(W) media.

If you're in the U.S., definitely try out some of the 4X +R's from TDK, Verbatim, Memorex, etc. These are usually Ricoh media (though they might actually be manufactured by another company, possibly Ritek, licensed to use Ricoh's media code). I haven't heard if they work well in the Liteon, but they generally get very good reviews from users and often go on sale at retailers like Best Buy for decent prices. The 2.4x version of the media is just as good, BTW, but it's usually the same price as the 4x.

  4. Check the media code with DVD Info PRO

If it says RICOHJPN...... go for it!

I've also had problems finding the right media for this drive.

First I bought some Infiniti (2.4x) discs from local store but there's a performance problem with some of those (DVD-ROM reads slowly those (1x)).

Then we ordered some Ritek discs (4x - RICOHJPNR01) from neogames and there's a problem with the outer edge of the disc. If I try to read those discs with my DVD-ROM drive, it often gives an error at 96% and not able to finish. In fact if you look at the disc, there seems to be some kind of glue or something like that on the outer edge. Weird.

This (near the edge of the disc) seems to be common problem with many discs.

Does anyone have a good suggestion what media should I try next?

I have a Liteon 401s also. I have had good luck with Verbatim and Fujifilm discs. They are both 2.4x DVD+R disks. Every disk that I have burned has played flawlessly on my Apex 1100w player along with a Sanyo, RCA, and an Emerson DVD player. No probs whatsoever. I have had one coaster on the Fujis but that was my fault. Also have tried some Sony DVD+Rs they were ok but not as good as the others mentioned. Good luck.

Well, movies that have been shrunk with DVDShrink or DVD2One. Most have been right at 4472gb. Maybe a little less.
