A DD-Wave file is just a DD (aka AC3) file that has been sector buffered and header-wrapped with the usual WAVE RIFF headers. To all external programs that don't explicitly support this format, it looks like a standard PCM wave file. It would just play "whitenoise/garbage" if you tried to play it.

So your question goes back to something more like:
"Which one should I do-mux video with AC3 or WAV/PCM?"
This is an easier answer... You CANNOT mux a wave file with MPEG video into a standard program stream (or system stream, or transport stream). The only MPEG stream that supports WAV/PCM audio is a DVD VOB. And the only way to mux together into a DVD VOB is to AUTHOR a DVD.

Now, MPEG2 Program streams will support Mpg1Layer1, Layer2, Layer3 (aka MP3), Mpg2Layer2.5, and AC3 stream types. But that doesn't mean that hardware players will support the playback of all these types.
I ought to know, I had this very same question about 6-9 months ago and did some trials. Yes, you can mux it (some are very difficult to do though), but rarely will anything non-standard play. At all.

IIWY, I'd stick with converting DVD's or DivX's AC3 2ch to Mp2; and AC3 5.1ch to Mp2.5 (aka Mpeg2 5.1ch audio) for use on SVCD, and using only the 2ch Mp2 on VCD. You can still do a downmix to Dolby Surround-matrixed 2ch and get some of the features of the original.

    Scott

so how do i convert an ac3 file into an mp2.5 file? (by what app?)
And if i want to use the AC3 file directly, i'd use the normal AC3 file, not the DDwave file, u say?

BeSweet can convert AC5.1 down to MP2 Dolby Surround (which is 4 channel Audio muxed into 2). Dolby surround isnt' 5.1, but it's much better than straight stereo (rear speakers do that).

You can read about the development of the Hypercube transcoder from past threads on this site, or go to http://hypercube.is.dreaming.org/.
