  1. Office Max is having a sale this week on DVD-R and DVD+R media from Imation. A ten pack, with jewel cases, cost $9.99 after an instant $8.00 savings and a $10.00 mail in rebate from Office Max. Thats $1.00 a disc, and I have used Imation very sucessfully.

They also have the same Imation DVD+R and DVD-R 5-Pack for $4.99 without any rebates.

    Store codes:

    2023-2865 for DVD+R

    2033-7761 for DVD-R.

I bought two 25-Pack spindles of Imation 2.4x DVD+R disks from Best Buy some time ago. They are RICOHJPN code. They work good. I can even burn these 2.4x disks from one spindle at 4x with my Lite-On 401S.

    Don't know about DVD-R.

what burning program do you use to do this? I use copytodvd and i don't think i can select the burn rate; it senses media speed and sets it. OR is there a way to set it!!

    noki,

I use the latest version of Nero 6.
As I said in my previous post I bought two 25-Pack spindles of Imation 2.4x DVD+R disks from Best Buy some time ago. It didn't say on the cover that they were 4x, that's why I say that they were 2.4x. So, I was burning them with Nero 6 in my HP 200i burner at 2.4x without any prolems.
Three weeks ago I bought my second DVD+R/RW burner - Lite-On 401S (in WalMart for $98.00) because I wanted 4x burning for +R and +RW to save 10 minutes, and because I read user comments about this drive on this web site that some were burning 2.4x +R disks at 4x with this drive. To my suprise, Nero 6 gave me two options: 2.4x and 4x for Imation +R disks with the 401S.

    noki,

I checked the media code of my Imation +R disks using DVDinfoPro, DVD Identifier,
and Smart-Burn Media Check utility made by Lite-On.

Package says: Made in Taiwan. Doesn't indicate any speed, so they are 2.4x.

This is what DVDinfoPro reports using HP200i on my second computer:

    Media Information
    Disc Regions are------------------- 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
    Media code/Manufacturer ID ----- RICOHJPNR00
    Format Type ----------------------- UDF 1.02
    Implementation id ------------------AHEAD Nero
    Format Capacity--------------------4.32GB(4.64GB)
    Book Type -------------------------DVD+R
    Media Type ------------------------DVD+R
    Default DVD+R book type ------- DVD-ROM
Media Id Code Speed ------------ Unknown
    Available Write Descriptor---------CLV 2.4x 3380KBps
    Available Write Descriptor---------CLV 2.0x 2770KBps

    Linear Density-----------------------0.267um/bit
    Track Density-----------------------0.74um/track
    Number of Layers-------------------1
    ====================================

This is what DVD Indentifier reports using Lite-On 401D on my second computer:

    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R00-01]
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc Type : ---------------[DVD+R]
    Manufacturer ID :------- [RICOHJPN]
    Media Type ID :----------[R00]
    Product Revision :------- [01]
Disc Application Code : - [General Purpose]
    Recording Speeds :----- [2.4x]
Blank Disc Capacity :----[Not Supported By Method 2]
    ===================================

This is what Smart-Burn reports using Lite-On 401D on my second computer:

    Drive Type = DVD+R/+RW
Disc Type = DVD+R (Single Layer)
    Disc MID = 52 49 43 4F 48 4A 50 4E (RICOHJPN)
    Disc TID = 52 30 30 (R00)
Manufacturer Maybe = Ricoh Company Limited
    SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 4.0X (Write)
    ====================================

    So, the code: RICOHJPNR00
And, you see, Smart-Burn reports 4.0x (Write)

    Sweet baby, Lite-On.

thanks for getting back with the data. seems your spindle media is the same as my 5-paks. think i will use nero (5.5.10.42) to burn my next project and see if it will allow me to select 4x. thanks again, kabanero. BTW you might want to go to your local OfficeMax and pick up some of this inexpensive media with jewel case too! $1 per 4x media is hard to beat today!

I purchased the IMATION DVD+ 5 pack for $5.99 each and they are RICOHJPN speed 2.4X. I haven't burned any yet. I just got my PLEXTOR 708A and I'm a newbie at backing up DVD movies. I did a movie on DVD+RW RITEK it came out ok.

I am backing up a favorite DVD as I browse. Using one of the DVD-R's from Office Max, it is burning at 2X. Looks like it will take 14 minutes or so.
Web pages open a little slower and the CPU is @ 94%. Using about 314 megs of memory. This should test the software, hardware and the media.

[Edit] It took about 38 minutes but plays on a Pioneer house machine as well as the computer. [/Edit]

Are these good, reliable discs? I just bought a new pc with a multiformat DVD burner (NEC) this past weekend, and I'm getting the Panasonic dmr-e100hs in a couple of weeks, so I'm going to need a lot of discs (mostly -R) for storing data files from the pc and archiving tv/vhs with the Panasonic.

My Office Max has a whole rack of the Imation +/- 5-packs for $4.99, so I'm wondering if I should stock up while they are cheap. I want good quality, reliable discs, but I'm new to this so I'm not sure what all the specs posted above mean. I guess my guestion is, are these good discs for permanent archival or are there better/more reliable ones out there that I should use, in which case I might just pick up a couple of packs of these to make test discs with until I get the hang of everything.

    Thanks for any info,

    Roy

YES, BUY THEM. You may be only able to burn at 2x but maybe at 4x, either way its a good deal with jewl cases included. Anything around a buck a disc with jewlcases from a top name manufacturer is most definately good!
