  1. I have installed VirtualDub so I can produce AC3 audio but am unable to get VirtualDub to load the AVI file. It is a true AVI file. When I try to load the file, I get an error "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)". Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or missing or how to get it to recognize the codecs installed? I have been editing for quit some time but have never tried to generate AC3. I am walking blind in a dark room!

    Thanks

Looks like you need a DV codec. Go to Tools section at left and download one. Remeber, DV is an AVI format.

  3. Tommyknocker,

Thanks. I have several codecs on my PC, including several AVI codecs. I am not sure if I need to tell VirtualDub what to use or does it automatically find what it needs. I even went, at your suggestion, and downloaded some more codec, "AVICodec" and installed it. Still no success, although it does show me several codecs in the video and audio lists.

Look for DV codecs, like Canopus, Panasonic, etc. My favorite analogy for Dv vs AVI is "my Honda is a car". Of course, not all cars are Hondas, neither are all AVIs are DV format. Find the codecs I mentioned and install them. To avoid this problem in the future, get GSpot. It tells you what your video file is, what codec is needed to run it, and what codecs you already have installed.
    Hello.

  5. Tommyknocker,

I have GSpot but not sure how to use it. When AVI is loaded, Codec Box = 4CC-dvsd, Name: DVC/DV Video, Stat: 2 compatible codecs installed (more info...). Render Box = Video Src Type: dvsd. Thanks.

  6. Unless things have change, it appears that VirtualDub does not support dsvd (DV Codec) according to http://www.fourcc.org/indexcod.htm. It looks like VirtualDub is not an option since I capture with firewrie and a Sony DV8. Thanks for the post. You sent me looking in the right direction.

  7. Never mind the last post. I got 'dsvd' and 'dvsd' crossed. It seems that there is both. I am looking for 'dvsd'. My mistake - too many acronyms. I will keep trying.

But I capture DV from my Sony D8 all the time. Could you try to use Virtual Dub mod? It is what I use, and I made a DV with Video Studio, and VDubmod has no problem loading and playing it.
    Hello.

  9. Tommyknocker,

I have loaded VirtualDubMod but still no success. It still cannot find the 'dvsd' codec. This codec, I would assume, has to be present for my other capture programs to work. I can capture with Studio V8, and Vegas with no problem. It has to be something simple I am missing.

    Thanks

What DV codecs do you have installed?
    Hello.

  11. GSpot says I have two - 'DV Video Recorder' and 'AVI Draw' and is defaulting to 'DV Video Recorder'. Both appear to be 'DirectShow' codecs. Thanks

I see. Try to install Canopus DV codec and then try the Panasonic DV codec. You can find them both in the Tools section at left.
    Hello.

  13. Tommyknocker,

It was the Panasonic codec that made it work. Nothing else would do the job. I am at least able to view the video now. I will continue to see if I can figure out VirtualDubMod and what it is be used for.

    Thanks.

  14. Just a quick note. I was finally able to get a short test DVD put together and what did not work before on my friend's Toshiba with surround sound connection now works. And the great thing about it, it also work on my DVD players (Emerson and JVC). I will now start doing all my DVD's in this manner so that they are compatible with more DVD player types.

Thanks for all the help. This forum is a great teaching facility. :P

I dont believe virtualdub can take any type 1 avi files no matter what the codec. You might try to convert your type 1 to a type 2 and see if this works.

So that is how you get 4k+ posts. Putting needless remarks at the end of posts.

When you get to 4000+, the answer will be "yes".
