Well, since you said, "without a dvd writer hardware on your computer", I would say yes. You could get a standalone DVD recorder. They work in much the same way as VCRs, just with writable DVDs instead of tapes.

  5. NO ! However If you wish to write CDr in vcd or svcd format which will be readable on your dvd player then yes! they can be written on all cd burners. Read the guides about producing them.

I guess in all fairness you have to start learning somewhere - you wouldn't believe the amount of times folk at work have said things to me like "I heard there's a program on the 'net that allows a cd writer to write dvd's", so I guess it's only natural for folk that don't know to ask those that do what seems like a daft question.
And I guess it ain't as straight as it seems to us - after all, although cd writers write cd's, and dvd writers write dvd's, dvd writers also write cd's, so there's gonna be some logic to asking if the reverse is true.

  12. I was actually in line at CompUSA the other day and a salesman was telling a customer about how they had software that would quote "turn your CD Writer into a DVD Writer." I couldn't resist the urge to turn around and rebuke the salesman before he duped some poor guy into dropping money on useless software. Turns out, the salesman didn't even know that a DVD-R is structured differently than a CD-R. Beware retail stores!

One again the person who is asking this question has a blank profile.

Absolutely. I was in Circuit City a month ago looking for a singal switcher. Generally people use them for mulitple inputs to one output. I told the salesman I was using it for one input to differnt outputs and he told me it wouldn't work in reverse (which could be true if it was more than just a switcher). I convinced him to hook it up to a VCR and two TVs in the store- it worked.

(And why the heck can't I ever get the 'quote' function to work on these posts?)

    So what if it is.

How many ads have you seen for magic software that lets yoo copy your DVD's to a CD?

You and I know that means convert to VCD, is probably a pile of freeware and some instructions, but the average guy (child) in the streets doesn't know that. So its no surprise they think you might be able to burn DVD's in a CD burner.

Besides, these questions are always good for a giggle every now and then

Reminds me of the old adage that the only difference between a computer salesman and a used car salesman, is that the used car salesman knows that he is lying to you.
