  1. I have an HP DVD300i drive, shows up as a 300c in Nero. Works fine in any PC I throw it in.

Thought I would make it into an external USB drive, bought the Bytecc ME-320-U2.

When I plug it in, Win2k and WinXP both detect only a "USB Mass Storage Device". Thats all it detects it as, and I am not sure what to do.

If I throw a cd-rom drive in there, it works as expected.

Can anyone help? Did I waste my money buying the usb-ide chassis for this drive? Has anyone heard of a dvd300i working in this way?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Guess it was just the Bytecc isnt as high quality.. bought an ADS Dual Link Drive kit.. both USB 2.0 and IEEE1394. and the drive works like a charm now! Windows picks it up as it should, as a HP DVD Writer 300c USB Device..

Not a HP DVD300i, but I have a LG 4040B in the ADS Dual Link and it is only described in XP's Device Manager as a generic IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device-it works though with no problems. Also, had an A03 in a cheap ME-320U2F USB2/1394 and it also had a generic description-but worked perfectly.

Check the burner is set to master and not slave. I had this problem about 10 months ago and felt like a fool when I realised my mistake after spending hours doing all sorts of things.
