  1. I'm a newbie wanting to get started converting vhs to dvd. I thought maybe if it works well for me I could make alittle money. After searching most of the articles on this forum it seems that the advc-100 is the best. But I read that a camcorder is also an option. I also thought it would be good for those super 8's. I have a dazzal 80 but I don't like it and I can't get it to work with my dvd. Can someone compare using a camcorder like I was thinking a sony 100 or 200 mini dvd media at $900 or $1000 and a convertor. Like I need a camcorder anyway so if I dont have to have a convertor it's like a $250 discount on camcorder. But what about quality, speed and compatibility with my next problem which software I'll need.
Thanks in advance. This is an awsome forum I've spent three days and most of the nights reading and you guys are great the way you help each other I hope I can repay.
Better lookin at it then for it

I can't help you with an exact model because I'm in the UK with different camcorder models available than you. If you need a camcorder anyway, go for that instead of a capture device. If you might need to transfer older 8mm or Hi-8 tapes then go for a Sony Digital 8 format one. You'll need to check that whatever model you choose has analogue in and passthrough. Like I say, I can't help on particular models, although mini DVD seems more of a gimmick than a serious tool. It is intended for the guy who just wants to play his uneditted footage back on his TV, not for someone that may want to start getting creative with it.

Video quality using either a camcorder or capture device will be as good as the original. That said, if the original is noisy, the resultant DVD compliant mpeg will look worse. You won't lose any quality during transfer, you just might lose some later in the process.

  3. mrmom, please dont post the same question twice, that is crossposting and against forum rules.
