Problem with extracting audio from an Xvid .avi

I have an Xvid .avi file. When I open the file in Windows Media player it's plays perfectly with no faults.

I want to convert the Xvid to DVD. So I understand that I need to separate the audio from the Xvid so that I have it on it's own. This is where I am having a problem.

When I open the avi in G-Spot, it's telling me that the Audio Codec is: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3

When I open the avi in VirtualDub and then go to File -> File Information it says the the Compression is: Unknown (tag 0055)

Because it says Unknown I assume that the codec is AC3. I tried to extract the AC3 from the AVI with the help of this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php

I get an output file, but when I correct it with Besliced the file size is 0kb!
If the audio isn't AC3 then what is it?
It's probably MP3 like G-Spot says, but I don't know how to extract the audio so that I can finish converting to DVD.

You audio is definitely MP3. You can try extracting with Virtualdub-MP3, Goldwave or AVI2Wav.

..or just use "Audio - Direct Stream Copy -> File - Save WAV" in VirtualDub.
You will see movie.wav but just rename to movie.mp3.
Decode to wav with CDEx.

do what i do....

use mainconcept directly....no conversion....no manipulation.....works on everything.

oh, make sure you got right codecs...I use k-lite pack

I use to spend all my time stripping the wav file out....forget that.....

just let mainconcept do its duty....

of course. the original file must be in good shape (no bad frames...ect)
