  1. If you want to put an avi file onto VCD, then what's the point in using so many programs like Besweet and VirtualDub when you can just load the avi into TMPGEnc and press 'Start'. That's it. The Audio is in sync, there's no hassle, and you only use one program (TMPGEnc).

So I'm just wondering, what's the point using all those other programmes???

What's the difference between cooking your own food from scratch and popping a prefabricated frozen dinner into the microwave? Both will provide you with nutrition, but only the former will allow you to craft the outcome to your own personal taste.

  3. Not all AVIs were created equal...

Some have mp3 sound, some have ac3 sound, some have PCM sound...

Unfortunatly, TMPGenc ability to convert sound is nasty...

Thus, you need aditional programs to convert the sound into MP2 sound used in VCD...especailly if you have ac3 sound...

Note: I did not say MP3 sound...MP2 is like the father of MP3...

You might want to add subtitles, or resize (with a better algorithm than TMPGEnc uses) or add a logo, or take out some parts, or... (the list goes on). But if it works for you, please feel free to use only TMPGEnc in your AVI2VCD process.

  5. Ok, if I want to just watch the movie (not subtitles etc), then what's the best way to do it?

What format should the Audio be in? And what format should the Video be in for optimum viewing pleasure???

  6. Let's nor forget about quaility, because Nero's encode sucks!

Generally speaking there are two ways to do these things: the 'one click' software which does everything for, or multiple programs that each do a seperate and speific task.

The first is much easier and for most people does a good enough job. But a lot of people want more. Many you want a really nice menu, not just to pick from one of the templates. Or you want to add easter eggs, or seamless branching, etc. What about non-standard resolutions or specs. Multiple audio tracks, etc. etc.

I can capture with VDub, edit in permeiere, encode w/ CCE and BeSweet, author with DVD Maestro, run IMGTools and burn with DVD Decrytper. OR use Nero express to capture and drag/drop to nero to encode/burn.

Sure that's easier but I CAN NOT create the same project using nero (nor as good quaility). You need to use the correct tool for the job. Depending on what you job is that tool(s) is going to vary

  7. I don't want any menu's or subtitles. I just want to be able to watch an avi movie on my VCD/DVD player.

I just want the best quality video and the best quality audio. What would you recommend for that???

..to buy the movie on DVD (and do what you want w/ it) ..oh, and that'll stop
the madness finally. You can't go depending on .avi (aka, divX etc) as an
original, while they are mostly "mangled" by inexperienced newbies and
    those using D/L'ing software/sites
    .
    .
In short, you can't rely on these sources.

Actually, the best thing for this "impuls" ive person would be to listen to the replies he has gotten.

"I just want the best", but when he gets a reply, "But I just want to push a button".

Well, I just "push a button", because I am now satisfied with what TMPGenc will do for me. But a lot of people are still looking for the best quality they can get, so use a program specialized for each particular operation.

It happens that we get people who ask this on a regular basis. Full moon or something gets them to join then, and it's one of the first ?s.

If you want to put an avi file onto VCD
I just want the best quality video and the best quality audio.
Since VCD standard is very strict, it's pretty simple (no room for tweaks and fixes). Use TMPGEnc and the VCD wizard. Use tooLame as external audio encoder, as TMPGEnc's own is not the best there is. Author & burn with VCDEasy.

As long as the avi audio is not VBR Mp3
As long as the avi audio is not Ac3
As Long as the avi video has no bad frames
As Long as the video is 80 mins or less

Other than that (and propbably a few more cases I havn't mention, I agree with Mats

Yes, of course there are tons of exceptions. But since the q was just "Best quality VCD video and audio"... When we involve source material, the matter of course becomes much more complicated, as you say!
