When I convert to files using DVD2SVCD I have always been converting to SVCD and never burn more than 1 hour on a disc. I was wondering though on lower resolution avi/mpeg files if it is best to convert to VCD. In other words would a source file with low resolution end up looking worse converted to SVCD than to VCD. Thanks

Crap in = Crap out
VCD will be worse, but if your source is bad, I dont recommend wasting time w/ converting. -
Though VCD is worse (especially on PC, hideous!), often it looks fairly decent on TV off a DVD player and may be more compatible. For sources w/ low res and artifacts I find that the higher reolution of CVD/SVCD will bring out the noise more... VCD will blur it out.

CVD blurs the video more than SVCD because it has smaller resolution so it can put more data to one pixel. SVCD has bigger resolution that's why it is more sharper than CVD. I have no experience of VCD.
I recommend to all of you to use www.vcdhelp.us templates. If you modifie them a little to have possibility to use 2-Pass VBR instead of Constant quality you can have some high quality films in normal SVCD size. I always use this method to encode my films and they look much (MUCH!!!) better than normal SVCD's or puertorican CVD's
This is only my opinion, but I suggest you to try that way.
