I'm looking for advice from someone who may have used one or both of these cameras. The application for the camera will be creating training videos and occasional event photography. Getting high quality resolution and color reproduction are important. After some research the choice has come down to either the VX2000 or GL2 (Since backpacking the camera into the wilds is a consideration, the Canon XL1S is out of the running because of its weight.)
While Canon has a 1/4" CCD, the Sony has a 1/3" and that concerns me. I would think that there would be an advantage to having a larger CCD. The major concern is picture quality. All the other features are mainly just "fluff".
Thanks for your insight.

Greetings,
I do not know these 2 cameras but I do not agree with your statement saying all the other features are just fluff.
You need to consider the batteries type. I would not buy a camera not accepting normal batteries. I always carry 2 sets of rechargeable batteries fully charged and 2 sets of normal alcaline batteries. It saved my butt many times.
You need to consider the memory type: Memory sticks or flash cards. There is price and performance difference.
You need to consider the "saving the photo" time. If you have to wait 30-45 seconds between each shot or each 2-3 shots, it may have a huge impact on your photographic experience.
You need to consider the LCD screen and the options of the camera: Having a LCD where you can't preview the image in daylight can be a problem. Of course, most of the cameras, when you are in the sun, you need to put your hand over the screen to see the picture. But with some cameras, even doing that, you see nothing.
And the most important: You need to consider the zoom/lenses adaptation. The electronic zoom in allmost all cameras gives a very low quality result. I use only the mechanical (lense) zoom and 3x is never enough. You have cameras with 10X (without a lense) and this is great. I still prefer to have a couple lenses that I can adapt, so I can zoom pretty near.
Those are the options I remember on the top of my head. I ams ure there are other that may be important too.
Thank you -
Jestak - those are pro DV camcorders ..
not digtal camera's
Paul_W - those are both great units and ive used both ..
why dont you do some research at dv forums and at creativecow.com and at www.dmnforums.com - there is a 250$ rebate on the gl2 right now also .
i think i would go w/ the gl2 slightly above the sony .... but its a toss up and i dont use either one enough to form a strong opinion .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Oups! Hehe....My mistake.
I am sorry. Just forget my post then... -
I have a Canon GL2 and love it. Very sharp picture, good color, excellent even in low light conditions. Onboard mic is good but picks up a lot of ambient sound (not from the camera, but from your shooting environment), so I'd consider getting an external mic, perhaps even wireless, if you want real good sound as well.
I got mine 6 months ago from buydig.com (located in NJ, and I'm in NY state) as they had the best price. No unhappy surprises - it was brand new, sealed box, US warranty, all accessories as advertised, shipped day of the order. Now I am loking for a good tripod with a fluid head.
