ok i have been editing for a few years now, so im not really a newbie. my question is, when you make a video, some of it gets cut off all around right? well my question is, how much gets cut off. i am making some background and menu pages for a dvd im making, and i need a template to know how much to cut off on my images.

Its called overscanning and on average it is between 12 and 16 pixels on all sides, though it varies from tv to tv. Almost all tv's will overscan at least a little though.
Many editing programs and some DVD authoring programs have options for title or action safe zones. It draws lines on your display to let know know what areas will be lost to overscanning.
