Ive downloaded some AVI files, what's the quickest way to convert them to DVD complaint mpeg's ?. Nero Vision Express is very slow.

If you'd entered your computer specs, a more reliable answer could be given, but since you haven't I can just give you the figures I get on my system. Note that I use a real encoder and a real authoring application, not pointandclick. It may however give you an idea:
Encoding from AVI to MP2 takes around 2-4 times real time. (1 hr takes up to 4 hrs to encode depending on settings). Add a little for multiplexing and authoring, and you got the idea. My box has a PIV 1700 - GHz is the only thing that really makes a difference when it comes to encoding.

I can convert a XviD AVI to DVD in about....oh...4-6 hours. Generally I don't bother with VBR since it's a waste of time with an AVI source. How much re-sizing I'm doing directly affects how long it takes.
