Might seem like a silly question but does re-authoring degrade the video. I tend to re-author to remove credits and such. With a movie that is small enough to fit on a dvd anyway, should I just backup the movie without re-authoring? Or can I continue to remove the parts I want and not have to worry about quality loss?

You will get lot's of opions on this. If the movie is small enough to fit as ripped don't re-author. If it's less then 4.37Gb's,just rip,use IFOEDIT to create the require ifo files, then burn. Anytime you "process" a signal you risk putting artifacts into it. That was certainly true in analog days, why risk it just because the signal is digital.

Indeed, I use IFOEdit if it is a simple rip. I use a combination of progs such as Shrink for dvd9 to dvd5.
I recently bought a Matrix Reloaded and my brother and friends have been borrowing the DVD, when it got back to me, you wont believe the scratches visible on the DVD disc. thought I might backup. I've only backed up 10% of my dvd collection which is my favourite. Matrix is one of them.
