Look at the surface of the DVD. If it has smudges, wipe it clean. If it has scratches, get a Disk Doctor and resurface it. Even if there are no obvious scratches it still might need cleaning/resurfacing.
I've had good luck fixing bad DVD's with disk doctor but I have run into one DVRW that won't work no matter how many times I try to fix it. -
Are you both using the same operating system and same level of service packs? A long shot I know, but you never know.

Can't tell when you don't fill in your profile information. If your running FAT32, then you may be hitting the 4GB limit. Private Ryan is a big movie.
