  1. I've been researching this on the net (mostly here) with little luck. This is what I have:

    A quicksilver mac, 867Mhz G4, OS X10.2.8 (soon 10.3)
A newly bought and successfully (I think) installed dvd burner from Pioneer, dvr-106
Claims on some websites that burning with the wrong media (highspeed 2x or 4x) will kill my burner if I don't install the right firmware.
From the "Apple System Profiler" I read: "Disc Burning: Fully supported".

So do I need the firmware (anyone knows where to get the correct one)? Or am I set? I know iDVD is not suppose to support my burner yet, but Toast should work right?

The burner seems to read well, tested with CD's and a DVD+RW I recorded with my standalone Philips DVD-burner. I got some 2x DVD+RW media I want to test, is it safe or will my burner "die" ?

The latest patch for Superdrives in G4 macs that I downloaded form apple today, prompted me with the a text that said I didn't need the patch... But that's only for apples superdrives, right?

when you go to system profiler, what does it say the "revision is"

    For example, my drive says

    TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R5002:

    Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
    Model: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R5002
    Revision: 1031
    Serial Number: 23RB702218
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Fully Suported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal

for me 1031 is the latest revision/firmware

see what your says, and do a google search for dvr-106 firmware. see what the latest is and see if you have that.

As far as I know the pioneer A03 need a firmware updat to burn at 1x using 4x media.

Without the upgrade 4x media toasted some dvd recorders

The A06 is already 4X compatible and will write a 4X disk at 4X with no problesm you are fine

Also checkout www.xlr8yourmac.com for combatibility issues I think that there is a patch if you are having idvd problems I thought it should work without anything though but look at the reviews and they will let you know for certain

  5. Well, it seems iDVD strangely enough isn't even present on my mac... I guess I'll just work that out once I do a clean install of OSX Panther next week or so...

I searched for the firmware. I got "Device revision: 1.06" according to System profiler, and there's a new one out called 1.07, ( http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/support_software.jsp?category=support/software#fdvdwriter ) but it seems to be a .exe file - I suppose for it to work I need a pc with windows on it. So I conclude: I have the latest firmware for mac? I suppose so.

    Thanx for all your help.

Well firmware is firmware. There is no mac or pc firmware.
The dvd burner has a chip that tells the device "Yup I am a DVD-writer and I am cool ." The chip can be erased and reprogrammed (flashed) to fix bugs or add new features.

The delimma that occurs is that the program to send these new instruction for the latest updates are usually only PC compatible (sometimes mac versions of the updater follow later but they are few and far between).

The update that your were referring to was for pioneer a03 only you are just fine with an A06 with that version of the firmware

  7. I also recently upgraded my G4 to 4X burning via a Pioneer 106D (the black bezel version). iDVD does work with it, as does every other iApp. But this is because I did the most recent upgraded to OSX 10.2.8 (and will go to Panther in a day or so). The 10.2.8 update has the 106 built in as a supported drive.

My firmware is 1.06, and while there is a 1.07 out there, it's not essential to use it (and to do so does require a PC).

There is also a patch that will enable this drive to burn 1X media as 2X, or something like that, and render it region free, but again it requires a PC to install. See

    http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/

    for details.

While I basically wanted the 4X DVD burning, the 16X speed for CD-R is very welcome.
