  1. Hi all -

I am just about to start the transfer of a bunch of standard 8MM video tapes to DVD using the dmre60.

The Sony camcorder I am going to use has DV out, composite out, and S-video out.

I have read on the boards that using the DV out would not be the best bet as the e60 has some TBC that actually can improve the quality during transfer, and that DV out will require an anolog to digital converison in the camcorder and a DV to DVD format conversion on the e60.

    So my questions are:

    1. Is the above correct? Should I use the analog outputs for the transfer?

    2. Should I use the S-video or composite output if I use composite out?

    Thanks,

    Eric

p.s. I plan to experiment a little, but hopefully someone has already gone through the process.

If it were me, I'd choose the analog connection over the firewire because of the reasons you mention. Generally a s-video connection is better than composite, however with DVD recorders a composite input is "upgraded" to s-video quality anyway so you are likely not to notice much difference between using composite or s-video.

  5. I use s-video out on my Sony to svideo in on the dvd recorder. 8mm is VERY low resolution, so don't expect broadcast looking dvds. High8 is great.

  6. Yeah, the videos I am transferring are all about 7-10 years old, back when an 8mm camcorder was $900 and a hi-8 was out of my price range. Very disappointing to look at the playback quality now.

I am using a Digital-8 to do transfer to the DMR-E60 - it is a Sony TRV350. Bought it because it has a FireWire out that I can use to transfer the footage to my computer. But then I was stuck with trying to figure out what output to use to the DVD recorder.

  7. I'm not sure if I'm correct here, but are you sure you're even able to even go through the firewire with you 8mm tapes? I think it's only when you have recorded in digital then and only then you can. My Sony TRV120 plays digital and 8mm, but I don't think I can go through the firewire if I use 8mm tapes???

  8. Depends on the camera - the 350 has "Analog-to Digital Conversion with Pass-Through". I can capture 8MM to my computer thru the FireWire link with no problems.
