  1. So I have a customer that wants to replace her tube TV in her Kitchen with a white LCD TV. She wants it where her current TV is and the only connection there is a standard cable coax jack. Because of the location, without major rennovation, i.e. tearing out cabinets and wall coverings you can't get a new wire there. It was wired when it was built or the one that is there wouldn't be. All of the White flat panel TV's I have found do not have the coax input. She does understand that she wouldn't have HD service at that location. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the HDMI to Coax converters? I believe you can route and HDMI signal over a coax cable.

Alternatively, there are wireless options available you might want to consider.

These solutions can be pricey, but so too would having to string a new cable through the walls.

What is the make and model of these TVs? Have you looked at a display model for them to verify there is no coax connection? If the TV has a tuner, it almost has to have a coax connection. Except for hand-held models, I have not seen a TV with an integrated antenna in years. Coax may not be listed in the specs, but it would be needed to connect an antenna.

If the client needs an STB (for cable or satellite), unless the tuner/STB has an RF remote control instead of the usual infra-red, it needs to be close to the TV and it will use the coax cable connection. The TV can be connected to the STB with whatever alternate outputs it provides.

  4. I agree - if it hasn't got a coax input I don't think its a TV - more likely to be a monitor/display. If that's the case then a set top box (as previous poster mentioned) is the answer as a display/monitor can't do anything with a TV signal without some sort of tuner (i.e. the coax input).

Here are some white kitchen HDTV sets. They will tune analog, ATSC and clearQAM cable (including HD for locals).

A key feature to evaluate on these small TV sets is the sound. Last I checked, the Vizio sound was better than the Samsung at this size. That $199 sale price, 36Watt power consumption and 1680x900 panel resolution also tip to the Vizio.

I have the previous 19" model that works great as a side TV + second computer monitor + great for field battery power off an inverter.
