I have a ton of 30 minute vhs tapes. These are almost all cartoons like Veggie Tales, Rescue Rangers ect...
My thought is do each one on it's own VCD and make a master data DVD with as many that fit. Since these will be used by children I expect to be replacing them occasionally as they are trashed. The DVD is just a back up to so I won't have to start from scratch when one is detsroyed, so it won't be played really.
Having looked over VCD, SVCD, and done alittle testing, I am not actualy sure how I want to do this! Most everything is trying to get as much time on a CD as possible, I only need 30 minutes maybe 40 max but best quality I can get on a CD.
I did a VCD at max settings for bitrate I get half a Disk! Quaility was not the best I wanted.
Svcd I read is not as compatible with players, since I never know what I will buy in the future I want it to work on as many as posible of course.
Mostly cheap players as I expect kids to break those also
Any suggestions? (Yes Gees, I looked to the left alreadyAnd will again too)
I am using an ATI AIW 7500radeon and would like to capture directly to the correct format/settings if I could. I do have Tmpgenc though.
I can go ahead and put 2 on one disk and still have 100mb left over if VCD is the best I can do with this.
Any suggestions? Which guides might be best for this? Best free programs to use?
Currantly I can't get to lordsmurfs site, I have tried! My IE 5 crashes on both my online systems for some reason I haven't figured out, but only there ???

May I ask... are you definitely set on either VCD or SVCD at this point? I know CDRs are so much more expendable :c) But have you ruled out multiple edisode DVDs altogether?
I do a lot of those for 2 nephews I have and make fun menus for them, many with hidden game-type features.
If you had a source for reasonably-priced, but reliable discs, it may be less work and less cost (higher compatiblity with current/future players) and higher quality in the longrun.
Just my idea on the project. :c) That would handle all your "bests" :cD Unless these are especially naughty children who destroy everything at first touch, it's what I'd do. :cDThere's no place like 127.0.0.1

Actually that was my first thoughts, put about 4 to a dvd, maybe more.
In the long run it would actually cost less (maybe same) $1.25 for printable DVD or 4x$0.30 ($1.20) for Cds, then add 4 cases also instead of just one
But then when I start replacing bad ones, the price jumps to $1.20 each compared to one $0.30 disk. Cost for this isn't important though really.
One reason I wanted VCD instead of DVD is they work in any computers almost. I have 2 old systems myself and few friends that have OLD systems that won't even upgrade to DVD rom! (I also have 4 newer ones that can do anything)
I don't plan to loan out my disks, but the friends have similar 30 minute tapes, No DVD players, not even set tops. So if I could do this on CD I can make thier backups for them and the kids can watch them on the 486 computer while thier dad watches foot ball all day
Nearly time for football!
They also have only one TV.
Makes me glad I don't have cable or satilite this time of year, don't have to put up with the wife watching football or tying up the VCR recording it
Since we have many of the same movies I could make one for me, then just burn them a copy of it as a backup for thier tape too.
No real need to capture the same tape 3 times just because 3 people own the same movies
I gave them some low quality VCDs I made before and they thought they were the neastest things, but I want better quality myself than I am doing. -
Ahh. I see :c) It's because of your kind and caring nature :c) that its become so hard to choose.
I only offered my opinion in case you hadn't considered it, not knowing about your friends TV/PC situation.
It sounds like a fun project, once you're on your way with it. Best of luck.
I'm sure the VCD and SVCD crowd will pop in with advice soon. :c)There's no place like 127.0.0.1

LordSmurf.com was made for cartoon collectors (like myself).
I put seven 23-minute episodes (30 min without commercials) on one DVD at perfect quality.

Or maybe I am just a lazy show off that doesn't want to do the same work twice
Naw I preffer your version
Lordsmurf,
As much as I really would like to visit your site, it is still crashing on me! Did you get the pm I sent again a few days ago?
The system I am on now is really out of date, IE 5 40bit, this morning I tried a link to a guide from the tools section and actually had to reboot my system! The browser locked in all windows, not just the currant one as it normally does! This one is Win 98se. Normally I just get the error box, click close/ok and the window closes all else works fine, but today they all locked!
On my other system I have 2kpro and IE 5 with 128 bit and it crashes the currant browser window when I go to your site.
It seems today almost the entire page loaded, it was near the very end, most likely part of the frame?
I have a system sitting at my ISP for fast access for downloading (3k at home) when I go in next time I will try with that system, I think it has IE 6 on it and Netscape 6 also, maybe later today I will be there.
Only your site is crashing any of my browsers and I can't see why?
98se and W2kpro, 2 diferent systems both IE 5, ones 40 bit other is 128 bit!
I beleave I was at your site begining of this year and read a guide or two, might even be one I printed then, but I cannot get there now!
