Asked this not long ago, but as I'm getting a little frustrated with this issue (after further trial and error), and didn't get any replies, I'm trying again:

I have: 4 VOB's, ripped to HDD, the IFO and all other DVD files.
I want: A DVD with 1) The video (transcoded to lower bit rate) 2) One audio track 3) One subtitle track
To boot, I don't want to use any one click solution (like dvdshrink) at this point, I want to do it the hard way, and learn something in the process. To this end, I've used DVD Decrypter to rip, and ReJig to transcode/demux video/audio. ifoEdit to author. Couldn't be more straigt forward.
    I have achieved 1) & 2), but 3) still bugs me.
To recap, so far I've tried this:
    Trial 1:
Ripped the sub track I wanted with SubRip, got 4 .sup files (one each VOB). Selected them one by one as sub track (all set to the same language), but as expected, I got a DVD with 4 different subtitles, all the same language. Looked beautiful, tho...
    Trial 2:
Ripped the sub track with vStrip, and got me 1 file. However, if I use this, ifoEdit simply ignores it, and creates a DVD without subs at all.
    Trial 3:
Ripped the sub track with VobEdit, and got me 4 .sup files. In desperation I tried to concatenate these to one file with copy 1.sup+2.sup+3.sup+4.sup all.sup and used all.sup in ifoEdit. ifoEdit started to complain about end if stream and buffer underruns while muxing the VOB, so I didn't even bother to look at the end result.
So, I ask again: Has anyone any ideas on how to rip a sub track that's split over several VOBs to one .sup file for use with ifoEdit? I'm losing my sleep over this!

    TIA!
    /Mats

  2. Use VOBSUB to rip the subs from files, then use subtosup to convert the idx file you get from vobsub to .sup-file/s. Using vobedit to rip/extract subs usually ends up vith an error when trying to multiplex things back in ifoedit. This way is the only working way I know of, using ifoedit to multiplex.

sub to sup can be found at http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm#subs

Yes, I'll try that as a last resort, but it seems like a roundabout way to achieve something that in my (in this area new) eyes ought to be a pretty simple thing to do...
    Thanks!

  4. Well, it is simple, works everytime. Just open first vob in vobsub, choose wich subs, get an idx and sub file, open idx in subtosrt, and you get a .sup-file for every sub you've choosen in vobsub (2:nd step). all togheter a 5 min process and it works everytime.
Get your new reencoded movie, the audiotracks and the .sup-files and muliplex in ifoedit.
There is a know issue with vobedit and exracting subtitles, it doesnt work properly.

OK, I'm at the end of the rope - How do I rip a sub stream from a VOB with VobSub? I thought I knew my way around, but suddenly I'm a real no0b!

  6. As vobsub is installed you got it on the start-meny, choose "vobsub Configure" (not directvobsub configure).
As it start you choose open and changes "files" from *.idx,*,sub to "ifo and vobs". Choose the ifo file for the vobset you want to get subs from(usually VTS_01_0.IFO), select where to save the file, then you get a screen where you can choose wich subs and vobID you want to rip, dont change anything there. just hit start. As you will get an individual .sup-file for each sub in the end anyway. When vobsub is finished just close it and start subtosup.

Unfortunately, that's what I thougt. No dice. This doesn't seem to work if the VOBs and ifo aren't corresponding. I've ripped part of the DVD in chapter mode with DVD Decrypter, so VOBs and ifo aren't corresponding. If I select the ifo, I get to specify output dir, but after that, nothing happens. The OK button's still inactive. I can't believe this!

Ah! Now I ripped the complete main 'movie', and now I can rip the subs with vobsub, and select just the chapters I want.
So, my next steps will be:
Dump the complete rip, and rip just the chapters I want in file/chapter mode.
    Demux a/v and shrink video.
    Author with new m2v+ac2+sup
    Keeping my fingers crossed!

Hieehaa! Don't give up - that's the lesson. Finally managed to author a DVD with "any" chapter(s) I want, with the corresponding sub stream. Had no idea it could be this hard, but it was worth it. Now I might take a look at dvdshrink too
    Thank's for your help!
