screensize not in 4:3 proportions after TMPGenc. What's wron

Maybe somebody can help me.
I am in Europe so i have to use PAL.

I capture with VurtualDub format PALD2 352*576 (that's what advised). So the original format delivers not a AVI-screen in 4:3 proportions.

Converting with TMPGenc2.0 for SVCD.
Settings VIdeo: CBR, 2200 kb/s,Interlace, high Quality.
Advanced: Source= non-interlaced, source aspect ratio=4:3 625 PAL, video arange mode=full screen (keep aspect ratio).

Well, the output is a picture that's still too high (not in 4:3 proportions, just like the input-AVI was. Looks like 3:4).
I tried several settings for "source aspect ratio" and "video arrange mode". Nothing delivers a 4:3 proportion picture/screen. And I need that of course for my television display.

Do I have to use another captureing format? 640*480 worked but this is a NTSC format and causes some other problems.

What am I doing wrong??

Did you burn the MPG and play it on your TV? PC monitors have a Display Aspect Ratio of 1:1, TV 4:3, and movies 16:9. The resolution actually has nothing to do with it, you can have a DAR at any resolution (in theory). Take a look at:

Often what looks 'wrong' on your PC will play fine on your TV.

352x576 is a non-standard resolution. The PAL standards are:

VCD - 352x288, SVCD - 480x576, TV 720x576. 352x576 is a common 'hybrid' resolution so you can capture all the lines.

Following your advise, I captured in 480*576 format (Virtual Dub) and encoded with TMPGenc 2.0 to SVCD (settings 4:3 625 PAL, full-screen-keep-aspect-ratio). I burned the MPEG with Nero 5.5 (SVCD, with menu option) on a CD-RW. The SVCD played in the stand-aolone player, but the TV-screen showed "wrong image size". It was not full screen and the image had the wrong proportions between highness and width (too high). Any idea what's wrong or what I am doing wrong?

What do you think about this answer? Varies a little bit from yours. So I am a little confused.

"I think the error is source aspect ratio.
If you capture 480x576, it's not 1.333, it's 0.833, so you can't tell TMPEGEnc to keep aspect ratio!

You can try to set the source to interlaced (it's true for a TV capture!) (so tmpeg take the source as 480x288 non-interlaced, 25fps, 50field per second)
Or can try to set source aspect ratio 1:1 vga, then in the video arrange box choose custom size and set it to 480x576.

As Vejita-sama said, the resolution has nothing to do with the final TV-screen proportions.
Just set source aspect ratio 1:1 (VGA) and video aspect ratio 4:3.
If you capture in 480x576 resolution and convert to 480x576 MPEG, you can use both video arrange methods "custom size" and "full screen(keep aspect ratio or not)". There shouldn't be any difference.
Let me know, if you find one.
