I hate to ask such a newbie question--but after downloading this zip file I have run the install program and restarted. Is that all I have to do to update the firmware? There are an awful lot of files. Other installation/setup needed? Sorry to be so inexperienced.......

Just make sure you have your lg 4040 connected to the secondary ide master ALONE.
After you run the .exe file and make the upgrade, reboot the pc and the new firmware will be the A302.
thats all! -
after the restart can you see the new firmware ?
Nero CD Speed can be used for this
also Nero Info Tool
if it shows the new firmware at the drive is working, that's it. -
Ran it but it did not install. I'm sure my GSA4040B is not installed alone on the IDE. Is there any way around this??
Thanks,

It seems the LG will now do a '10' on Nero's DAE test, will see if any reasonably priced 4X media will now produce a decent burn. -

"????? there is only one .exe file for the update."
Where is "readme.txt"?

For some reason mine came up with an .htm extension, if it does for you just rename it, dropping anything after the .zip. Should be GSA4040A302.zip, then .exe (1,203KB) after unzipping (no readme this time). Shut down any apps that are running then double click it to install. Will take about a minute. -
maybe i have wrong but it seem that verifing in nero last longer then with 301...
Before it took to burn & verify 4.2 gb divx filled dvd on 2x 45 min...
Now same dvd media (g3) take about 55 min to burn & verify...
btw. sorry for bad english... -
I had a problem updating my firmware from a300 to a301 once because I have a celeron 1ghz, I have to set the lg 4040b to PIO mode and then tried the upgrade and it worked! After that I set the drive back to DMA. My stupid celeron doesnt have ultra dma
Just thought this info maybe of some help.... -
Here is my problem with this burner. I have the A302 firmware. But i cant burn dvd-r past 2x. Apparently everyone has this problem and it has something to do with the media you use. Im using Pine 4x dvd-rs. The 2x works fine on my dvd player but i purchased a 4x burner, not a 2x. When I go into Nero to burn it, i cant even select past 2 times so i dont know if it is the media. DVD Decrypter actually shows you the speed it is burning at and it stayed at 2.0. So anyone who has burned at 4x with this drive please help and let us know your media and how you did it. Im sure other people would like to know as well.
Thanx in advance. -
Right, here we go:
With firmware A300 & A301 I have burned at least 75 DVD's + & - with:
TDK -R made in Japan @ 4x (Tayo Yuden)
Verbatim 4x-R made in Japan @ 4x (Tayo Yuden)
Verbatim 4x-R made in Singapore @ 4x (MCC)
Verbatim 4x-R made in Taiwan @ 4x (CMC)
Verbatim 4x-R made in India @ 4x (Mose Bayer)
TDK 4x+R made in Taiwan @ 4x (Ricoh)
Verbatim 4x+R made in all the above factories @ 4x
with Firmware A301 you can also burn Princo 4x -R @ 4x (Princo = rubbish media )
Memorec 4x -R will burn @ 2x with A300/301 dunno about A302
so in a nutshell, a very well made burner, with the most features that does not like shi..y media.
Burning cd's:
Verbatim data life plus 48x will burn @ 24x
Acer 48x Gold burns @ 24x
Hitachi Maxell 40x & 48x will burn @ 24x -
we have not that a big selection of media locally so this is all I could test it with.
Basically it will work with any Verbatim media
Anything that comes out of the Tayo Yuden factory
TDK media
Media made by Ricoh
and I'm sure there are other media like Maxell that will also work -
With A302, BeALL (G40001) burn great at 4X, with a very clean reading in Nero CD/DVD Speed. A great match for the LG and very reasonably priced and consistant so far.
