a sincere hello to my respected peers..your newest member has i hope a straightforward problem for the gurus amoungst you..i have bought a philips dvdr07 to record tv programs whilst away on business. i want to watch them on my ibm thinkpad laptop (windvd loaded) ...want is an awfully small word, achieving is another matter, as youve guessed i have tried to playback my homemade dvd on my laptop..and NO success..can i ask if anyone would offer their experience and advice if there is a software / hardware solution i can try before i return with dvd and tail between my legs to the shop.
kindest rgds
weekipoo
i have been asked by 2 kind folk in the forum to give some more details to the above problem.
as i understand it my laptop dvd drive is most probably a dvd-r, in this instance i can understand the inabaility for the drive to read my home burnt dvd+r disc, what i would specifically like to know is there :
a) a software dvd viewer program available (windvd or equiv) to enable +r format to be played on -r devices???
b) a method to encode the philips dvdr70 disc post burning?
without a solution to this i will be making that journey to the shop..
ps
am i the only person in the forum with a home +r recorder and a laptop??
again thanks in advance to anyone with the decency to bother to reply with any constructive advice

An adorable post :c) But you are not giving anyone even the slightest clue as to where to begin to try and help.
Tell us what you've done, what you used to do it, what went wrong... etc. and maybe there is hope to match your want.
And... welcome. :c)There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Check wether the DVD-drive in your thinkpad is able to read DVD+RW (that's what is says in you title).
Did you try any other format like +R -RW -R? -
OK. OK. I take that back - one clue. :c)

OK ahem (getting back into character here
), to be honest I've not seen the shows for some time now ... and I'm not keeping up with the latest shows (sorry, I'm not a real "hardcore" fan).
weekipoo, did you find any info on your DVD-reader? -
weekipoo - I missed the fact that you've provided new info because you added it to your original post.
You could have just posted again after my joking posts with R & S. :c)
Your DVDrom drive should be able to read any DVD + or -
If it is having trouble, then there's another problem.
a) a software dvd viewer program available (windvd or equiv) to enable +r format to be played on -r devices???
b) a method to encode the philips dvdr70 disc post burning?
a). I use PowerDVD for viewing DVD and mpg files.
You should be able to view the DVDs created on your standalone through your DVDrom drive with PowerDVD or WinDVD.
If you are having trouble, I'd do searches using your standalone model name as keywords and see if anyone else is having the same problems. It shouldn't make any difference that you are using a laptop rather than a desktop PC.
b) If you want to work with files created by your standalone you will have to transfer them to the PC. If the DVD it creates includes the DVD structure of ifo, bup, and vob files, you use VOBEdit to turn those vobs back into the video and audio streams and then re-author.
You've been calling it the "DVD drive" on your laptop. If it is a DVDrom drive, you will not be able to re-author the DVDs created by your standalone except to make "harddrive DVD" (files) that you can play on your laptop.
You'd need a separate DVD burner to reauthor changes to a disc.
Hope this is helpful. I'm still a bit unclear on all you might want to do with your setup.There's no place like 127.0.0.1

what a well thought out reply you sent..you are very kind to have replied.
im dismayed to hear that the dvd i burnt using my home philips recorder should play on my dvd rom drive (ibm thinkpad t20)..
as i explained the disc would not play using windvd software.
i will look at powerdvd website and search the forum using your davice for search method.
i wish i could explain further the problems im facinfg but essentially its just down to a non playing problem.
again many thanks

You're welcome. Where I'd start is to identify your DVDrom drive exactly, then try to find posts and info that has clues with what works for others with the same hardware.
In my experience, all drives (as opposed to writers) play + and - but someone could easily come along and tell me I'm wrong. Perhaps you have a really picky drive, but I think more likely it's some other problem.
Try some creative searches right on this site. :c)There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Gees,
Just a data point for future reference. My player will play -R, -RW, +RW but it refuses to play +R discs of any kind.

We were referring to DVDrom drives. I know many players balk at certain media types and brands.
Or did you mean your drive, rather than your player?There's no place like 127.0.0.1

@weekipoo
I hope we didn't offend you by fooling around but ... it's Gees fault!
OK I'll stop now.
On my laptop I can play +R -R but no +RW, I've this little tool which tells you what the capabillities are of the installed drive. Problem is that I forgot what it's called (old age) and I'm not at home right now
As soon as I get home I'll let you know. -

Good luck. -
many thanks to you both for your help i will do my best to track down the leads and tips youve given today..very kind

I've checked my laptop and saw that the program is called DVDINFO (yup ... it's old age
don't even think of it Gees !) http://www.dvdinfopro.com/.
Second thing, my DVD-ROM can only read -R and -RW. -
@tigerman8u
DVDInfoPRO gives you better Drive and DVD Media information than Nero InfoTool
@Ren & Stimpy
My Toshiba SD-R2212 (notebook CD-RW, DVD) is not supposed to read plus medias, yet it does.You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
@tompika
What does DVDInfoPRO tell you?
Cuz I have Toshiba SD-R2312 (notebook CD-RW, DVD) and DVDInfoPRO tells me that it can't deal with +R and +RW (I've tried and DVDInfoPRO is right about it). Don't get me wrong but I'm just wondering what DVDInfoPRO is telling you about your DVD-rom.
@weekipoo
Have you figured out yet what the capabillities of you DVD-rom are? -

ok good people, more help please
..i have checked the spec of my dvd rom drive in my laptop, and its a toshiba sd c2302 ( basic work horse dvd rom drive)
i am unable to download the advised programs until next ..and ive checked in the forum search without success for past topics concerning playback of +r .
knowing the dvd format of the drive will only technically prove it wont play +r (but i know this from field tests)...so to re-cap
1. do i have to replace my dvd rom drive in my laptop to a +r reader..(if so any suggestions)
2. is there a software program available capable of allowing a +r disc to be played on a -r rom.
sorry for all the questions, but you guys are way further down the line on experience..
many thansk in advance and i appreciate greatly the interest in this matter to all who have replied thus far.
