    Hi everyone !
I got this idea of replacing the DVD-CDROM with a IDE HDD so i can store all my DVD movies on the HDD with my computer, and then install the HDD into my DVD-player and watch them all on the DVD-player. My question is if this is possible at all, and if it is, what filesystem should i format my HDD with ? is it possible to format it with UDF filesytem ?

every answer or thought is appreciate!

  2. interesting idea ! :P

unless your DVD standalone has an IDE controller, you're not going to be able to install it. Having said that, they do say the most of the new cheapo DVD players are based around a PC DVD-ROM drive, so you never know!

I suspect this will be difficult, very time-consuming, and possibly expensive.

If that doesn't put you off - good luck!

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

Thanks for the quick response !

I took apart my dvd-player a few days ago, and there's a regular pc dvd-cd-rom with IDE connection and an regular powercable in it. So fysically there wouldnt be any problems replacing the cd with a hdd. The problem, as i see it, is to get the dvd-player to read from the hdd. I dont think the dvd-player can read from FAT32 or NTFS filesytems. But i havent tried anything yet, so im still open for suggestions !

There are cases where people have added a HD to their DVD players, but it may need a firmware upgrade/patch - look here: http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/

I'm not sure if this can be done either, but it seems like a good idea. only I was thinking instead of swaping the dvd-rom drive for a HDD, to somehow add a USB or Firewire port, and use an external HDD. This way you can still blay DVD disks.

  8. HDD are usually formatted in fat or ntfs. whilst Cdr are done in CDFS of which I know nothing. However modern dvd players will play unauthored mpg files off a data cdr, and hence should be more flexible in thier requirements. Good luck.

  9. But can the firmware/bios of your standalone read an ATAPI IDE HD? Yes they use IDE DVD-ROM drives but doesn't mean they can read NTFS/FAT32 partitions.

Still it's worth trying out. Never know it might work. I would suspect thou that IF it did work the standalone would only read/play the VIDEO_TS folder, or maybe the direct MPEG file is your standalone can do that.

I gotta admit, I'm lost here. You want to add a HDD to your DVD player, or replace the actual disk player, or what?

If you were talking a TiVo, or Replay, I would say, sure, if you go to the right place for help, and hack the box with Linux. Those machines are Linux, and you can add a couple hundred gig drive to them. You screw up, your machine is screwed, too.

Why don't you just get a Vid Out card, store the DVDs on your HDDs and play them from the PC. I don't know how you are going to tell a DVD player, which is a laser device, to scan.... what....and play a movie on a HDD replacing the optical, and randomly accessible DVD.

    Ah, well, more info, please.

    Cheers,

    George
