Has anyone here replaced the HDD and if so, was it straighforward? I'd like to place a 400GB drive in mine. Any advice you have would be great.
Thanks

well i attempted to replace the hard drive in mine with a bigger one but upon doing so the unit reports hdd error and locks up.. putting the original 160gb drive in a computer doesnt get me any closer either... the computer doesnt recognize it and want me to initialize it so my guess is they are using some sort of strange file system for the unit. if anyone has ideas on trying to find out the file system please let me know

8) Have you tried to format the HDD with the recorder? Read the manual it should tell you how to do it.
If you don't have the manual, for some reason, here is how to format you new hard drive using the recorder. Step 1: Press the power button when the recorder is finished booting up HOLD DOWN THE HDD BUTTON ON THE FRONT PANEL FOR 10 SECONDS UNTIL "FORMAT" APPEARS ON THE FRONT PANEL. Moreover, if that does not work you'll have to contact SONY. 8)
Best of Luck to you! -
Grifs1,
Do you have this exact model? Have you been successful in getting a larger HDD to work? That'd be awesome if it works!!
If yes, what HDD brand and model did you use?-The Mang -
Its been awhile since i last tried this but if memory serves me correctly I got an error as soon as i booted the recorder and it shut back down, something like no drive found or device error or something to that extent. Its worth a shot and i might try again, while im at it i found a program out there that recognizes tons of different filesystem formats. Its called Gparted and is downloadable to a live cd that you can boot your computer too, could shed some light on how/what the file system type is that sony used originally on the drive.

It is also possible that even if you could get a 400Gb to work that Sony could have hardcoded the partition size for holding recordings.
Something like what IBM did with the AT computers when they found out that people were changing the clock crystal to get more speed. If anybody remembers that. -
actually that is exactly one of my fears that why I want to try and find out if the file system is something that i can format a drive with another device other than the recorder that way if they have hard set the size of the format partition the recorder will still boot the drive and give me all the space i have on the new drive
