  1. Hi All-

I am painfully new to this and tried to do some homework about my questions prior to posting, but did not seem to get a specific answer.

My project is to convert a downloaded movie to a CD. I am using Cucusoft encoder and have not yet started any conversion as I still have to study up more on it. Two basic questions I have....

If the movie has subtitles, is there any way to edit them out somewhere in the procedure? If not, will there be an option in the DVD player to not show them?

Also, not really knowing ahead of time, I have purchased Maxell DVD-RW, (video recording time up to six hours). Are these disks acceptable?

    Thanks for now-
    Probably a lot later-

  2. If subtitles are part of the picture, they can not be turned off. If you play the download on your computer and you see the subs, they are part of the picture.

If you want to convert to 'CD' as you say, DVD-RW is not going to work. Do you have a DVD burner or a CD burner ?
I mean it in the nicest way.

  3. Hmmm...guess I need to explain a bit more on the 'convert bit. The program I have converts AVI's to either VCD, DVD, SVCD, MPEG1 and MPEG2. There is then a step to create a VOB, IFO with additional software. In choosing the DVDRW CD, I meant that to be the media that I was going to burn to after conversion. Yes, I have a CD and DVD burner, (supporting RW).

I am disappointed that the subtitles cannot be turned off. What is this I hear about movies in CD format, when played, have an available option for the viewer to turn off the subtitles, (or captions maybe another word)?

    Thanx-

  4. Calling a DVD a CD causes confusion. They may look abit alike, but so do my father in law and his dog .

Maxell is generally considered a good DVD brand. But the only way to know if it is good for you is to try. You should first look on the DVD Players compatibility list to make sure your player plays the type (+ or - or RW or R).

    As far as subtitles:

There are 2 kinds. Selectable(switchable) and non selectable. The latter are actually part of the movie. You can not turn them on and off. You can blur or crop them away if they are a big problem.

Selectable subtitles are supported by (I beleive) 2 standards: SVCD which is put on a physical CD, and DVD-Video which is put on a physical DVD disc.

This is generally done by the authoring program. For DVD, I think only big money programs do subs, with the exception of the fabulously free IFOEdit (which does not do menus).

Bottom line .... If you see the subs on the AVI, they are part of the movie picture.

Here are some guides. They may give more info:

    Hope this all helps !
