  1. ok....this one has me stumped.

I had to re-install W98SE (yeah, I'm still using it). I just did a simple re-install over the existing instead of wiping everything.

Prior to that TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 was working great. I was churning out dvd-compliant MPG-2 regularly from many varied sources. I was even able to load .wmv files, apply filters and drag the cursor through the video in the TMPGEnc edit box to check filter impact.

But since the re-install TMPGEnc can't seem to encode/convert any video without errors. As a matter of fact, most videos just seem to to "freeze" early on and never come back. I've uninstalled TMPGEnc twice and re-installed....I've triple checked all of the environmental settings....I've un-installed the Ligos MPG-2 decoder and re-installed.

It's all turned to shit. I can't even create a simple VCD file out of an mpg-1 or avi without the problem.

I have no clue at this point.....maybe some of the brainiacs here do...if so feel free to enlighten me please.

    I'm running a P4 2.4Ghz, with an ATI 8500DV, 512MB Ram

  2. Since you reinstalled window, did you reinstalled the codecs?

  3. 99% of the time, I find that re-installing Windows on top of itself causes headaches later.

You might just need to bite the bullet on this one and format the drive adn the master boot record and re-install clean.

Then re-install all your programs and codecs.

you should be careful....there is a long history of killing the messenger bearing bad news.

Fortunately, after un-installing and re-installing various codecs I was to return to pretty much where I was before. I think it was a part of the K_Lite codec pack causing the majority of the problem....funny thing is I don't remember ever installing it....hmmm

I still have one...."defect"....before, I could use TMPGEnc to open large .asf/.wmv files, apply filters, and convert to MPG-2. After selection the video would open almost immediately, and when I chose to open the simple color correction screen (or any filter screen for that matter) I could drag the cursor back and forth through the movie to see the effect of applied filters.

Now, TMPGEnc takes 30 seconds to open a 1 hour .asf file and if I actually have the patience to make it to a filter screen, simlpy dragging the cursor a minute distance causes the app to slow to a speed akin to a geological epoch.

I have no idea what the previous setting was that allowed me to use TMPGEnc to encode .asf files but I'd like to get back there....if anyone has a clue I'd be grateful for advice....thx

Hey!!....you're pretty smart (at least compared to me...)

actually, since i had direct x 8.1 before (v 9 has had problems on W98), and even though it said I had v8.1, I re-installed anyway and presto!

    so thanks a lot
now...since you're so smart.....my wife tells me some in-laws will be visiting next week....any idea on how I can change that setting?
