I would like to backup a small DVD I have (small meaning smaller than the 4.5BG that a DVD-R will hold). Is there any reason to use DVD2One, or can I rip and burn directly using the unencrypted files? I've had luck both ways with two separate movies - one was fine, the other screwed up the menu and it wouldn't play in most players (save the Apex 1100w)
Also, if I choose to use DVD2One, I gather that I should use the "variable" setting for a smaller full disk copy - would others agree (just looking for opinon here - since there seems to be no fact)?

nope all you need is to rip all the files from the dvd then burn them onto a blank

well rip as in back them up.
if you just OPTION DRAG a dvd to your HD it will copy the movie, BUT!!!!! it wont decrypt them so your burned dvd will look all funny.
just back them up, using DVDBackup or OSeX then burn
