Nice forum here, I've used the guides and faqs before making divx. This was back in the 3.11, nandub days, seems everybody is doing it different now. I just got my first dvd burner, plextor 708a. Only thing I've done with it so far is backup a concert Operation:Livecrime, using DVDxCopy Express. Everything seems fine, audio seems a bit out of synch a few places, but I'm pretty sure it's same on original. It's possible that recoding caused it, if I remember right from making a dvx of it, its native 29fps and only thing I could do was use filters to deinterlace it. Anyway, I'm happy with first results and looking forward to gaining more control over the whole thing. I've been reading through some of the guides and should be able to do ok with their help.
The questions I have are regarding media. Paricularly 4x media that will burn at 8x in my burner. Also I've seen codes posted about media but cant get any meaning from the codes. I have browsed around quite a bit and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, here is a list of what I'm after:
    1. What are some good choices for DVD+R 4x media, reasonably priced, that will do 8x with no problems? The dbase is kinda skimpy on 708a entries.
    2. Who are some of the favorite online vendors of dvd media? I've found lots but quite a few aren't listed with www.resellerratings.com so I thought you guys could point me in the right direction.
    3. Am I overlooking a guide or FAQ about understanding the media codes posted? Could somebody explain or point me in right direction?

    TIA for any help.

    peace.

Have you had a look here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia yet?

There's dropdown boxes for type and speed and you can read comments from others on how each works for them. Some people even leave details of where they purchased it. It's a good place to start.

If you see one that sounds good to you, do a search for it in the box on this page upper right, and see if anyone's discussed it in various existing threads.

It's very hard to make recommendations on these things, as what works perfectly for one, fails miserably for another - even with nearly identical hard & software.

Look up your burner too, in the Writer section, & read any comments there.

    Happy hunting. :c)

unloaded, I have the same drive. Mine writes at 8x using TDK 4x DVD+R and Memorex 4x DVD+R. These are what I have alot of these days so my input only.

Nice, I can get them locally, but they are kinda pricey. I ordered 25 of the Ritek 4x DVD+R's from rima. If they do good at 8x I'll be getting a bunch of them. I'll be sure to post my results either way.

If you live near a Compusa they have a good deal on Memorex media. If you print up the ad from their web site you get 40% off the store price. I get a 50 pack for $60 before tax after the discount. They are also sold in 25 packs. I've use them and TDK discs and never a coaster.

No CompUSA locally 8( My choices are BB, CC, OfficeDepot, Staples, Sam'sClub and some local computer shops. So far Staples seems to be best, gonna check out Sam's, whichever has best deal I'll grab a few to hold me over until my order gets here.
